that's an excellent price for a custom built carb. i'm interested to see how it does tomorrow.

Re: Winter upgrades

Well, I finally have an update for you guys. I went to the track last week but I ended up blowing the trac-lok on the third pass. I knew it was the weakest link and that I was taking a chance on it but oh well. Anyway, because of that I was only doing one tire burnouts the entire day and was unable to get any decent 60 foot times.

So I replaced the trac-lok with a strange lightweight spool and went back to the track today. I was running 12.20 pretty consistently today at 111.50 mph. I noticed my afr's were a little rich so I decide to do a jet change and dropped it two jet sizes on the secondaries. This time I ran a 12.10 at 112.35 mph. So I realized I was getting somewhere, and so I dropped it two more jet sizes in the rear. And this is what led to my best time of an 11.89 at 114.28 mph. Anyways, long story short I ran consistent 11.90s for the next 3 passes and left. It might still have more in it I will have to play with it some more next time I head out there! Oh, I was pulling 1.59 sixty foots as well and my front tires are seeing some daylight underneath them as well!

Anyway, I would like to get it a little quicker still. Today was the first time running 11's with the full exhaust. I'm thinking it still has some more in it as it sits, lol. Mph has picked up two tenths from last season, now just have to lower the et a little more with it as well!

Re: Winter upgrades

Best time last year was 11.91 at 112.56. Which was with open headers. But its weird, because I ran only .02 quicker but I picked up 2 mph. Also was quicker in the 60 foot going from 1.64 to 1.59.

Just a couple more money shots of the car I figured I would share! These pictures are actually taken with a nice camera and not my iPhone, lol. Crazy how far this thing has come in just 2 years.

Re: Winter upgrades

Thanks alot guys! I'm hoping to be able to get it to run a little quicker before this whole season is done. It's fun pushing the vortec heads to their limit rather than purchasing an engine that easily will run low 11s.

That's right about where I want to be but 2-3 mph quicker. We'll have to see if I ever get time to go to the track this year. Great times!

Re: Winter upgrades

well, two years ago it was running what, 13.oh's? a camshaft, exhaust, and gears put it into the 11's. a proper carb will have it go even faster. just proper setup and tune goes a long way.

Re: Winter upgrades

Yeah isn't that the truth! Actually two years ago is when I bought the car. It was in July 2011 and it ran 15.96 with the 305 motor. I swapped in the 355 and it ran 13.97 before I did all the tuning I started. Then its spiraled from there, lol. But I have definitely learned what correct tuning can do for you!

Re: Winter upgrades

Just a small update. So the car has been running pretty well lately. Points races just started this past sunday, and the car went 11.89, 11.91, 11.93, and an 11.99 so it was a pretty good day and am in 6th to start off the year. Anyway I just finished up a cowl intake I have been building and I havnt ran the car with it yet, not sure if it will make It run any better or not. Only spent about $40 in total so wont be a big loss if it doesn't. Here are some pictures for you guys...

Re: Winter upgrades

Just an update to last Sunday for you guys. The car ran an 11.85 with my previous best being 11.89. Not much of a difference but there was a 28 mph head wind that day so I'm thinking if the wind calms down this next weekend ill be able to run faster. I'm trying to win in my sportsman class this year so I'm trying not to make too many changes like I was last year. I dropped to 7th in points after race number two. I won the first round and lost the second. I had an .06 light to the guys .059 and I dialed an 11.88 and ran the 11.85. He dialed 11.77 and ran 11.769. Double breakout, but I wasn't expecting my car to run faster than an 88, lol. Still alot of fun, I'm really enjoying not touching the car all week and putting it on the trailor and running 11s everytime and then going back home, lol.

Re: Winter upgrades

Just a quick question for you guys. I was thinking about replacing my rocker arms because I have the stamped steel oe rocker arms. I was thinking about going to a full roller to increase the longevity of the valvetrain and maybe free up some horsepower that could be restricted. Not going to increase the ratio, still going to go with a 1.5. Would there be a noticeable gain in this?

Re: Winter upgrades

absolutely. if nothing else, the valvetrain will be much more stable. i had no idea you were running stock rockers still....they've been known to flex a lot under big lift situations, and are very inconsistent in ratio size (as in, some are as low a 1.3 or lower!). i really really like the comp pro magnum rockers, not sure if they're available any longer though.

Thanks guys. That's what I have been reading lately. I was going to replace the rockers when I put the cam in, and forgot about them and then got carried away with how the car was running, I forgot all about them.

Re: Winter upgrades

Just another small update for you guys. I have replaced my stamped steel rocker arms with Scorpion 1035BL Full roller self aligning rocker arms. I have to say these things are really nice. The stamped rockers actually were in really great condition and it was really clean in there, but I still like the look better now. Here are some pictures for you guys.

Re: Winter upgrades

I couldn't justify spending 80 dollars on mine. It cost me a total of 24$ and around 2 hours total time. I also like how I built mine specifically for my car so that there are not any clearance issues.

I just bought sheet metal from home depot, and then measured three inches around the air cleaner and made it that much wider around and then took another piece of sheet metal and bent it around in a circle and riveted it together. I mocked everything up with cardboard first, saved a lot of time and money.

Just a small update. Car is running better and better throughout the year, haven't really put anything else in it. But I do have a new best time now of 11.76 @ 114.94. Hopefully I can keep climbing down that 11 second ladder with these vortec heads, lol.

Re: Winter upgrades

Are still running the XR288HR cam? Our combinations are also very similar with the difference being in camshaft mostly. I can see how you can get away with 10.5:1 compression. With about 10.4:1 and my short cam, it won't run on pump gas unless I strip all the timing out of it.
I would expect low 12's myself, maybe an 11 second pass althgough I'm a little heavy at 3650 lbs.
Nice job.

Re: Winter upgrades

Thanks man! And yes I am still running the XR288HR. I've luckily never had a problem with 93 octane and even running race gas at the drag strip for some test runs never helped the car at all. Luckily my car weighs 3200 with me in it so that helps alot as well. I would say your car should have no problems going low 12s. Vortec heads seem to shock alot of people, lol.

3200! With driver! Wow. That's light. Have you done anything to shed weight? I'd be instantly faster if I could take 400-500 lbs out of the car.
