think i can get my iroc to 14's
think i can get my iroc to 14's
i have a 86 iroc-z with the 305 q-jet carb when it was all stock i ran 16.4 @ 85 mph do you think i can get into 14's with my mods
270h comp cam
flowtech headers no pipes no mufflers
edelbrock air element.
if not what should i add? i soon well get a new intake i'm thinking edelbrock performer or weiand steath intake? i also have a edelbrock performer carb that came with the camaro but was to much carb for the stock 305. well it work with the mods? the only thing my engine light well always stay on with that carb because the computer does the air/fuel ratio with the q-jet. i what to get to 13's with out NOS if at all possible. can it be done?
Its better to
then to fade away!

I think one of the major magazines is in the middle of a 305

the biggest thing you cna do to help any car is to get gears and a good posi. traction adn gearing will do more to help or hurt and ET than anything else.
a lot of 305 guys have had good results with 3.73's.
after you can use the power you have better you will want to take care of getting more power.
the open headers are also not liekly to be too great for performance either(yes, i know how cool it sounds
) but you do need some back pressure to help with scavenging. if the exhaust flow is too free you will start pissing your intake charge right out the exhaust, and that doesn't help you.
what intake do you have on the car? if it is stock, that is a place for a huge gain. something simple liek a performer or some similar aftermarket dual plain intake will give you a huge gain, adn it is far less hastle than a cam swap.
the open element is definately a good call ove rthe stock junk our cars came with.
adn don't forget the little things, like adjusting hte timing, putting a curve kit in the distributer, freshening teh carb and adjusting eth mixture a bit for more power, adn a nice fresh tune up.
if you have an auto, a torque convertor will also help a lot, the right convertor can be worth several tenths.
just think simple stuff, 14's are not difficult with a 305, especially if you are working with a carb and don't have to work around ecm tuning.

also aren't the heads a weak spot on his car?
if you go with a dual plane intake can't you run a larger carb
and how large is that performer carb you have?
if this is going to be a street car I would say get some pipes and muffs on it for two reasons
sound, and also when you do not put any pipes or mufflers or the car due to the shorter pipe you are going to tune your exhaust for higher rpms.
I would say go for gears/posi, if you have a 5 spd I would pick the 4.10 if you have the auto go with the 3.73
also for an auto get a torque conv that is matched to your powerband.
FULL TUNE UP.
also being carb a spark box might help you out a bit
take care of the little things though as NJ SPEEDER said
and make sure the car is running right before you do any real mods to the car

Dropping 1.5 seconds means adding about 100 hp. Bolt-ons will not get an extra 100 hp. 30-50 at the most depending on how bad the old combination was.
The best way to make more HP other than NOS is with heads. It's not a cheap way to go but it's the best way.

yes i have read the 305 13's et in the mag's CHP!! But they didn't change the carb. and didn't put the no were near the size cam in it that i have in mine now!! i think if i go with the intake and posi and 3.73 gear can get the same results!! becides my car was a full second fast then the z28 stock that they started with i ran a 16.4 all stock it only ran a 17.4 i think it can be done i want a 13 car but a 14 would be nice to. i still think my car well be faster then want you give it credit for!!! i post new times when track opens i beleave i going to get the intake before i go!!! i don't know what the carb cfm is all i know its alot more then the stock!!! u think 700 or 750!
