Car: for now i have a 79 firebird that had a toasted 301 (imagine that!)
Engine: well i *had* a 301, but there is a pontiac 350 on the stand to get me on the road again and a 428 after that :D
Transmission: th350
question for rx7speed

hey rx, you seem to be up on all the rx7 stuff. i was planning on getting another car to shuttle my *** back and forth while i do some work on my firebird. so i thought about getting an rx7. here are a few questions that i would like to ask if you don't mind.
1) what are the years to avoid (if any)? 2) about how much should i expect to pay for one? 3) are they dependable?

i don't need anything flashy or mint condition, just a daily driver that doesn't use as much gas as the old firebird (12 in town 20 on the hwy). thanks for the help.

my opinion of the best years would be 86-91

mine is an 87

the ones before that are carb, smaller motor (but still get less gas milage then the larger motors ) use a live axel, and just aren't that great looking....

the 86 on up have the IRS, better susp, better gas, more power, better tranny, hell quite a few things are better

I don't know all that much about the first gens problems but I have seen them go for around 800 for a beater.

the second gens are going to cost a little more, I payed 2200 for mine. but I have seen them go for around 1000-1800 before if you look around

my gas milage right now on 176k mile motor is 20-22 city 30-35 hwy

as for reliable

out of the whole time I owned this car on the stock stuff I have only had one problem. that was the driveshaft broke and took the tranny with it.... but that was after many years of abuse and quite a few 5000-6000 rpms clutch dumps
I have taken the motor up to the redline many times without problem (7k rpms) and if I am racing I hit around 7600-7800 rpms... I have driven around at the legal speed limit in first gear at around 7000 rpms without issue also

most the stuff on the car is strong as hell

if you want to go looking for rx7's though or found one and want me to take a look at it with you my number 455-0345....

hehe I was just around where you live last night also was doing some g-tech runs since I had nothing better to do around 2-4 in the morning
