Bought my first car! 1989 Firebird Formula

Bought my first car! Found the car for $7000CAD and got it down for $5000CAD. Runs and sounds great no dents no rust. It turned out to be a formula edition - too bad someone spray painted the entire car even over the stickers. Interior is nice. The previous owner bought it for $4000 and has receipts of a bunch of work totalling around $4800! He bought it 5 months before covid since he was a huge knight rider fan. I just love the look of the car and the t-top; my brother has the exact same one 1989 but v6. He got into an accident and the v6 firebird was parted out.

This one is a 305 TPI 5 speed manual with T5.

Few issues I need to fix:
Replace the audio speakers someone cut the wires.
Both headlights wont go up or down.
Rear hatch seal needs replacing.
T-Top seal needs replacing - it seals but looks brittle.
Door seals are brittle.
Needs new paint
Valve stem seals are starting to leak (smoke on startup for 10 seconds)
Passenger seatbelt wont retract (spring shot out)
Screw holding the panel covering the speakers beside the back seats is stripped.
Hatch is too far back.
Buy the original aero spoiler!
Rear diff leaking from the cover.
Missing TPI runner/plenum bolt.
Replace headliner.
Exhaust leak bad muffler.
Replace radio antenna.
Fix rear hatch motor ****.

Oh yeah its got 200km on it. I am going to attempt to replace the valve stem seals with my dad and replace the valve springs since they are old. No idea what springs I should get for the LB9 TPI apparently the cam is bigger on a L03. Need more research.

The car is amazing. Feels like being in a bat mobile knight rider. The 305 runs great sounds great couldn't be happier.

Re: Bought my first car! 1989 Firebird Formula

welcome, judging by the pic yer not too far away. looks like a pretty straight tinkertoy, you'll be doing lotsa that. if the 305 runs great and you couldnt be happier, leave it alone and fix the other stuff first, driving it around is the real fun, you'll have plenty of time fer teardowns, guaranteed... u wont notice any difference after fiddling with valve springs n seals, except fer the down time. fix the springs n seals when you have to go into the motor for something more serious

Re: Bought my first car! 1989 Firebird Formula

I didn't really think to post any updates, but over the past 2 months I have replaced fixed a couple things. New TPS sensor, cleaned IAC and throttle body (it got stuck), new coolant heater valve flow thingy the old one was cracked. Oh I resprung the seat belts so they are snappy now. Lubed them up they feel new! Someone had strapped the rear hatch assembly together... I had to replace the reverse switch, nylon guides, clean out the motor and lube it up. Works perfect now neat feature. Below is the strap job before fixing... no wonder my hatch was crooked.

Then I removed all the interior to convert it to black. I don't like the musty gray. After removing the interior I saw the amount of rust under the carpet... I went along sanded all the rust spots and painted it.
The carpets were dyed black and all the interior pieces were painted in black plasti-dip so that I can restore it later on if I choose to. The dashboard was also wrapped in a leather vinyl to keep it in good shape.

After that was taken care of I sprayed the entire floor pan and trunk with thin rubberized coating. Not really needed but it looked nice, and helps with the sound dampening.

Next thing to do is installed all new speakers, amp, hidden subwoofer, and sound deadening. Keep in mind I have no idea what I am doing, and I have no experience working on cars so go easy on me...

Re: Bought my first car! 1989 Firebird Formula

Finished wiring all the speakers and adding the sound dampening, What a different the sound dampening made. I went with Norco 80mil sheets and some frost king duct insulation for areas that didn't matter much. The car sounds solid now; no more tin can effect. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference.

I installed all new speakers. First time ever doing this... it took a long time. I went with Rockford fosgate 4x6's at the front, Kicker DS 6x9's for the rear all running from a Kenwood 600W amp, and I replaced my spare tire with a 12" Cerwin vega spare tire sub with integrated amp to keep it hidden. Sounds awesome. Learned a lot along the way.

Here is my distribution block I installed behind the drivers side kick panel. Both the sub and main speaker amps connect to it then a 4awg wire runs to my battery with a 70amp inline fuse. The wire went through an existing grommet.

And finally my carpet I dyed black.... I used duplicolor vinyl fabric paint in the end because the dye didn't hold well. It looks good and feels ok but I do want a new carpet in the future. Patched a hole in it under the seat. For now it rocks

Again I still have no idea what I am doing other than I looked at my muffler; it looked like ****. Took it off and turned out it was the wrong size so I will be swapping to a magnaflow muffler soon with the N10 exhaust. I also plan to strip the rust from my t top area where the seals are and replace all that hopefully next week. I just found out I have C&C t tops!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rare I guess.
