Car accelerated by itself

I was driving my 89 Camaro rs and then noticed it started to accelerate by itself. I tried hitting the break but could only bring it down to about 20mph as soon as I let go of the break it would start accelerating again. Managed to pull over and turn it off. When I turned it back on motor accelerated on its on while on park. Anyone know what could have caused this and or how to fix it?

Re: Car accelerated by itself

Sticky throttle cable perhaps. Take off your air cleaner assembly and look at the throttle blades, are they open at all?

I haven’t had a chance to look into it, but if what you said was the case, what would that mean?

Means the car would try to accelerate itself.

Perhaps you could find priest to perform an exorcism.
Your return spring on the throttle is probably broken...

Re: Car accelerated by itself

If the cable is ripped from the throttle would that be the cause?

Re: Car accelerated by itself

You need to physically look at what's happening in the engine bay before the problem can be root caused. If you don't know what you're looking at, take pictures.
