Front plate
Sup fellas, have a question for on the front liscence plate, does it have to be mounted or can it be in the windshield? Also if mounted does it have to be mounted a specific way? I have no front plate mount so am trying to figure it out before I try and get it checked for registration. Thanks!
The law is- permanently mounted to the front bumper at least 12" off the ground. (Unless factory mounting is otherwise.)
You can generally get away with it in the corner of your windshield (or often, laying on the back seat) but don't put it in the center of your windshield as it's really obvious. For a safety inspection, it has to be on.
It looks especially dumb on pontiacs, but it's better than giving officers a valid reason to pull you over.
If you can't find something to mount it on from a yard, see if you can just bend a bracket up at least temporarily until you can get the proper plate mount. Ebay probably works. Always got the dealer route if you have to.

Ok sounds good I guess, I have a bowtie grill which the holes for the plate mount are filled. The old grill I had was busted up so I tossed it out a while back. I really hate to have to cover up the nice looking grill to be honest. Seems like such a waste, Chevy really screwed the pooch on the front plate mount for the 3rd gen in my opinion. Maybe I can try and attach it like the 2nd gens were. Not sure how that would look though as well. Again thanks!

If you have a military decal the cops generally won't pull you over just for no front plate, since many out-of-staters don't require it. However, if you're stopped for something else, the cop might toss in the equipment violation unless he's cool and likes 3rdGens [I was stopped once for 75 in a 55 and after a warning he went on for 5-minutes about how much he missed his Camaro...]. About a year ago, after doing some paint work on both the '92 and '87, I forgot to reinstall the front plates, have not had a problem, don't care really since I'm going to AZ where no front plate is required. Here in HI, carry the plate in the car so if you're stopped you can say "it fell off" and you'll reinstall it today. BTW, the 82-92's can mount the HI plate directly to the center grill without the mount by bending the top half-inch of the license 90-degrees. I did that for about 4 years. Yeah yeah, I know it's illegal -- big deal....
Heck, the GM license plate mount is SO ugly... I have an extra one around if you want to borrow it for inspection. Also have an extra Z28 grill with license plate holes too.
