Wanting new Speedometer

Looking for a 145 or 150 Speedometer that would fit an 83 Trans Am. Anyone have or know where I could get ahold of one?

I'm pretty sure they only went up to 120 on the early third gen's. I am updating my 84 bird from the old cable driven 85mph speedo to an electronic 145mph speedo gauge cluster. If you wanted to do this, here is an article I found in the tech articles on this site that talks about it. http://www.hioutput.com/tech/speedo.html

I have an extra yellow buffer box that you'd need to do this conversion. You'd also have to buy an electronic sending unit for your tranny, an electronic 145mph speedo gauge cluster,, and a few of the pins would have to be changed around in the wiring harness plug,, but there's a pinning chart at this link also. Let me know if you're interested in the extra buffer box.

I found a company in LA that does conversions.

Hi,
The price to convert your own speedometer to 160mph is $175.00 + $9.95 for
shipping & handling. The turn around time is 1 week.

Can the buffer box and VSS unit be from a different vehicle, or does it have to be from the exact one that the guage cluster was removed from? I had ordered my 140MPH guage + cluster off eBay, and the guy doesnt have anything else for it.

I have the same old guage cluster as you did (85mph mech speedo). The only other difference in the guage clusters, other than the wiring, is the Fuel and Oil guages are swapped on the new one.

I don't know for sure if other models will work or not. I would assume that the VSS from a comparable GM auto with the same type of tranny would work. As far as the buffer box goes, I think you need to use an F-body one,, but I'm not positive about that either. I'll sell you the extra one I have for $12+shipping.
