I've never heard of it myself. It sounds like a dealer cosmetic package or aftermarket package. Maybe offered regionally in California only and dealer-installed? There have been others like that.

I believe the XS was a LosAngeles regional dealer added package. Try doing a search im pretty sure the topic has come up before.

I gotta hand it to ya.. as far as describing lesser known models or rare models your site is the best I've seen lately. you seem to have a page on just about everything. Except Recaros.. J/K

There was also a 'Firebird XS' badge inside the car somewhere, radio plate or console plate, I dont remember which. All the ones I saw for sale were V6's. Probably could have had a V8 though too.

The model for the Sacramento area of CA was given the designation "SSA" while the model for the Los Angeles area of CA was called the "XS".
When I had my old website there was a kid who emailed me about posting his car on my featured rides section.

He said his car has a badge on the side of it that says "Firebird SSA". He and I both could not figure it out. He asked around to alot of credible sources and got no answer.

Hmmm...seems I finally found out! Thanks guys. Here is a pic of his car. This is all I have. Notice the badge on the side of the car (barely) it is longer and reads Firebird SSA.

its an 89 with a 2.8L V6....

That car has been repainted and they forgot the rear SSA emblem or someone stuck those other emblems on there to try and get money for their V6.

What I'd like to know is if there was an RPO code for the SSA & XS...

There's a 91 Bird int he junkyard with Firebird GTX badging. Its just a typical 91 bird with the aero package and a 3.1L V6. It had some pinstriping and whatnot, but nothing out of the ordinary.

What's weird is in my area of town I have seen two of those Firebird SSA's. In fact I saw one pretty closely yesterday.

Yep, XS was a local project, but an official Pontiac option

I worked on this, along with almost all the thirdgen Firebird advertising stuff in print and on tv from 88-on. Having one made me the so-called expert at the agency.

XS was a regional program to try and resuscitate the F-car in SoCal. Insurance -- which killed the Fiero -- had its sights on the Firebird.

( At one time, one of every four Firebirds were sold in Cali ... and that may even be conservative. )

So the Pontiac answer was to put an insurable V6 in a base car with the more expressive Trans Am look and a really attactive merchandising price ... $12,995 rings a bell.

Just don't try touching 'em off with any 300 ZX's at the light...

We did a dozen different billboard with puns that all localized the car to Cali ... "Zooma Beach" ... "Santa Monica Peer" ... you get the idea.

The program was very successful by most reports, but the insurance industry wasn't letting it off the mat. Most LA dealers were reporting that the monthly on the insurance for the typical buyer was MORE than the finance charge!

How true! I remember those cars so well! Heck, I even took pictures of all the billboards that I could find! I'll have to dig them out! I thought they were pretty cool!
You want to hear a story?
When I bought my 1989 20th Anniversary Turbo Trans Am, I was cancelled every time I bought insurance! I was told that they never made a Trans Am with a six cylinder! I tried to leave the dealership, but I couldn't! No insurance! The dealership stayed on the phones themselfs trying to get me insurance! Finally, they let me go! Too funny!

Later,

George

wow, someone else has a ZF!!!! my last camaro was an '84 ZF. wood dash cover (just glued over regular dash), fading racing stripes, and fading stripes down the side of the car. mine was far beyond really repair, so she went to the junk yard last year when i bought my 89 rs. saved the badges somewhere in my room. cool to say you have a car that no one has ever heard of.

I never heard of a Firebird XS before reading this thread. Next day I looked at what I thought was a white T/A pulling up next to me in traffic and it said Firebird XS on the side. What a cowinkiedink! It was in Lomita, CA.
George, anyone you know?

camp3O, it had stripes? Mine was painted over black before I got it. i plan on keeping it ZF, as its an oddity. I need another door handle as the decal came off one door handle. I hope I can find one in a junkyard. What motor/suspension did your car have? Mine is a 2.8/ base suspension package. Any other interesting things yours had?

Hi Jon92TA!
Nope! I've never seen a white one in my town! But there's a red one that drives by every other day here!
Gee, you were in Lomita? HeHe!
next time you come out, I'll show you the literature on the car!

Later,

George

from what i can remember, it was the 2.8 engine and base suspension. i do, however, still have the rpo sticker (put the console lid on my current 89 console), so i should be able to come up with codes. i'm not anywhere near my car at the moment, so it may be a while.

Aero package is the marketing name of the lower body kit on the 83-92 Trans Am and W66 Firebirds.
