Car: 1988 Pontiac Firebird Formula
Engine: 350 tpi Stock
Transmission: 5S Manual
Previous Engine Swap = Current Starter Issues
Hello all,
I've got an 88 Firebird base that is VIN 305 engine w/T-5 Tranny. In this car's history, someone dropped the L98 350 TPI in with the T-5.
What I am experiencing is super long cranks before engine catches, if battery is not at 100% voltage it won't crank. (will crank everytime when jumped, or fresh recharged, or when left on float charger)
I went to autozone and bought a 350 starter (they said it was compatible), but the nose-cone geometry does not allow it to fit into the bell-housing. (found that out after 2 hours under the car in the Lowe's parking lot ). So I have some questions for you:
Other than dimensional size, is there any difference in performance of a stock 305 starter to a 350 starter?
If there is, do any of you have any recommendations of a starter with 350 performance specs but 305 geometry?
Is there a bell housing for the T-5 that has the geometry to fit the larger 350 Starter?
Any information would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks guys

Re: Previous Engine Swap = Current Starter Issues
Some 350 starters will not fit the T5, but you know this now.
Recommend replacing the factory original style starter with one for a 93-97 LT1. It's a better, light weight design and will fit. It's a PMGR (permanent magnet gear reduction) starter as opposed to the original direct drive. World of difference.
