down pipe

I dont really know too mucha bout turbocharging, and im trying to learn some basics. Is the down pipe basically your exhaust sytem?Since the manifolds/headers run to the turbo, then i beleive the downpipe would go to the catalytic converter and muffler. Is that right? And out of the pictures ive seen of turboed cars,i couldnt see the pipe where the turbo goes to the throttle body.Where is it?I hope some of that made sense...Thanks in advance.

The downpipe on a turbo car is the pipe that leads from the turbo exhaust flange to the next point in the exhaust system, either the cata lytic convertor or other piping. The look of the down pipe varies between internal and external watesgated turbos and turbo manufactuers. Some bolt directly to the exhaust housing, while others have a internal housing and bolt onto the end of that (ussually on internally waste gated units) The size of the downpipe is acctually just as important as the size of the compressor and the exhaust housings themselves when choosing a turbo. Too small a pipe and its like blowing into a straw, too large and you lose heat too quickly.
