you dont have to have a bottle blanket/heater, but they are recommended and the bottle size is preference, i would get the biggest one that you can fit where you want to put it

2) The size of the bottle is up to you. Standard is 10# and It will do many races, just depends on how long you want to wait between refills. I havent checked in a while but bigger bottles are usually a decent amout more.

Without a heater you will probably get about 4-5 consistant runs.
