Bigger Filter on ProCharger??

I was talking to this guy at a local speed shop the other day, and he told me that he has seen guys pick up around 1 pound of boost by putting really big cone filters on their superchargers. He says the filters that the kits come with are so small, that if you can fit a bigger filter under the hood then it is worth it. What do you guys think? 1 pound of boost kind of seems like a lot, but the filter that came with my kit is really small.

Come on guys I'm just curious. Any opinions on the subject? What about Willie and Maniac, did you guys notice any difference after installing your custom "air boxes"?

StocRoc,

No sir, i did not notice any difference as far as boost rising (still get 10#'s @ 5500rpm. and only a slight intake temp change with the relocation of the filter.

later

I have always heard use the largest possible filter that space will allow. Makes sense. More filter area, more air flow.

I also heard someone gaining boost with a larger filter. I just ordered a 9" cone for my Vortech.

hey there,
I just got off the phone with Jim Secrest, the guy who installed the supercharger on my IROC (WHICH IS NOW READY TO BE PICKED UP!! YEAH!!!) and he highly reccommended that I put a bigger filter on, as it picked up 2/10ths of a second just by doing that. Go with as big of one as you can is what I got from him.

Thanks for the info. man. That guy seems to know his sh*t. I have a magazine article on his car and another yellow Iroc, it's a good article and tells all about his setup. I actually read a post on here a while ago about him, I think some guys were arguing about his setup or something. Thanks again

geez ... I would have to bet that I started that thread too. I was excited about having Jim do the supercharger for me. I was actually going through the 'Tuned Port Terrors' article last night. I love that issue! He did wonders with his IROC. So yeah, I'm gonna do the filter as well and we can test it out and see how each other faired.

I have a 12# P600, but no gauges so I am just gonna have to go with what I was told

There are 2 things I noticed .... at 20-30 mph, it blows the tires off. AND going down the freeway, I didn't feel much of a difference!!! I'm guessing maybe because I was in overdrive instead of direct drive and because I was probably only on it 3 seconds or so. Who knows. Any ideas?

As far as a 12# kit, you're probably not making a full 12 pounds. Most ProCharged cars I see usually make a few pounds less than the pully is rated at. This also depends a lot on your current mods, the more efficient the engine is N.A. the less boost you will see. My car loves to boil the tires, and for me being on the highway is nuts. That is where my car feels strongest b/c it can actually hook up. It pulls pretty hard, and nothing beats how loud the ProCharger whistles around 5000 RPM.

Ok, here's the latest::

I went with my friend to a deserted highway here with the g-tec. I was kind of disappointed, but considering the traction issue, I guess it is understandable.

My filter is dirty as anything and I had my 200 lb friend in the car with me and we pulled a best 13.05 @ 115.6. Not too impressive considering I clicked off a 12.9 @ ??? before the charger. The issue is CLEARLY traction though. I had problems before, and now they multiplied. At one point I just floored it from a stop and it went through in 3rd gear still spinning until I let off. It is definitely something I am going to have to get used to!

Without my friend, I'd hit a 12.8 and with a bigger CLEAN filter, I should hit a 12.5. Then I can start tuning and practice my launches! It's sooo depressing when you can't get on it until 4-5 seconds into the 1/4. I dropped a half second from my 1/4 just by simply practicing before.
