turbo spec's

i am trying to make sure that i understand the rating on the turbos. example, if some one has a t3 with a .48 compressor and an a/r .52 exaust, compared to mine wich has .60 on both sides, mine will flow more air (more boost), and should spool up quicker.

say you have the .60 compressor and the .60 exaust, but change the exaust to the 1.03, the spool time just went down drasticly.

then you add a .78 compressor housing to the 1.03 exaust housing and you just increased the boost, but lost a little spool time because the exaust side did not increase.

is my train of thought is correct? feel free to corect me if im wrong.

thanks
anthony

Well it's not quite that simple. A smaller turbo (lower AR) on either side will make it spool faster, but you can run into air flow problems. If it's too small on the exaust housing, you'l get way too much backpressure, costing power at the very least. Too small on the compressor housing and you won't pump enough air to generate boost, or it can actually raise lag time as it will take longer to bring the intact tract volume up to pressure.

so in your opinion, what would be the smallest turbo you would consider running on a built small block, say a 383 or something of that sort? also, if i use the turbo i have, .60 on both sides, would that be big enough to run on a single turbo 355 - 383 ci? and would it work with the sequential turbo setup i would like to run, (for the low ned power until the big turbo is phased in).

also, what brand are those headers you have on your car and what mods did you have to do to get them to work (i also asked you this on the iroc zone) ?

thanks
anthony
