is my bottom end enough?
i have a 283 that is putting out about 250-300hp right now. i was thinking about putting a small blower on it like a weiand 177. Its a 2 bolt, i think it has a forged crank but i'm not sure, and shot peened rods(i don't know what that is exactly but thats what i was told by a guy who looked at them), and i think its got cast pistons but i'm not exactly sure also. it was rebuilt before i got it so i don't know exactly whats in it but lets say its mostly stock.
will it take a blower? also, how much more gas will it use?

Beware of cast pistons and blowers! If you get any kind of detonation, you can make a window in your piston. If you plan on going blown, typically it's a good idea to step up to forged pistons to be safe. However, if you can keep detonation from occurring then they might hold up. Moreover, that's a lot of blower for such a small motor. You could probably get by with a 142 unless you have plans to drop something bigger in. A lot will also depend on how much boost you plan to run. Keep it on the low side to be safe (like 5 psi maybe). Might be better for the bottom end too. good luck.

i have about 9.5:1 compression right now so i'm not going to be able to run much boost without going into the engine. and with less than 5psi, i don't know that it will be worth putting a blower on.
does a blower cause my gas milage to go down because this will be a daily driven car.

If you can keep out of the throttle, then gas mileage will not be affected too much.Any 283 will have a forged crank in it. I'm very certain that the factory never made a cast 283 crank.
Your compression and camshaft is more of a N/A selection and will not utilize the blower's potential.

However, I've got a 142 on top of my 377 and it is a daily driver. While my gas mileage isn't great, it could be worse too. And that premium isn't gettin any cheaper ($2.30+!
). I'm still trying to get it nailed down, but that is tricky. Can't have it running lean or else I get detonation. Often it's better to run richer to play it safe. Hope that helps...some.Ben
