3ld diesel turbo

I just got a holset 3ld turbo, I got it for five bucks, does anyone know if I can use it on my 350 carburator engine, the turbo doesn't have a waste gate, so im planing to put it with out the wastegate, would this be posible without damage to the engine.

Thanks.

If you got it for 5 bucks the person you got it form either - didn't care about it, didn't know what it was or knew it was broken. And start reading up and and use the search button. On a gas engine using a turbo with out a waste gate is a bad idea - things go boom.

the wastegate is what basically controls/limits your boost, so with out one you'll run WAY too much boost, but you can use an external WG, and on a carb you'll need it rebuilt for "blow through" those 2 things are a couple hundred each, then you need turbo headers/manifolds, intake piping, and intercooler is strongly recomended... you can do it, but you'll be into it a grand if not 2 grand. and like the cronic3rd said, good chance the turbo doesn't work

yea the turbo isn't in best shape, the compresor wheel is a little mest-up. Yeah I didn't think i could use it , i just got it because it was really cheap.

anyway, my firebird runs pretty good, it is a 350 5 speed, with alot of racing stuff, but i want to make it fly, I guees i'll have to gather some money to put a decent turbo in.

sorry about the spelling english is my second lenguage

No worries.... Your spelling is better than some for whom English is their "native" language..

3ld doesn't really tell you much… it's just a series name, somewhat like saying it's a T3 or a T04… it could still be big or small…

Also, I believe that there are 2 3ld's, one that was used on a bunch of marine and truck apps from about '64-77, and another one that was used on small marine applications around '95. Both are on the smallish side, most would top out around 250-300hp or so, but there is one that appears to be good for about 450-500hp. How about a little more info? Even something like inducer size would give you some idea of what power level it would work for. Also, there is usually a 2 digit marking on the turbine side that will tell you how big that housing is (I suspect LARGE, since I don't think that any of the applications were wastegated on diesels, both things that would imply a biger turbine housing).

the only two digit number that i found is f. 32.

The assy number is 53925 / 14.

I think the inducer size is 3 inches.

Doyou think is a good idea to fix this turbo and get an external wastegate?

If the inducer size is actually 3" then that is a pretty good sized turbo, but doesn't match anything that I've described so far. Barring more information (the assembly number doesn't seem to translate to anything that I can find) I'd only be guessing, but I doubt that it would be worth putting any effort into. I suspect that the compressor size is roughly similar in flow to a T3 (you'd need 2 on your 350) and the turbine side is too big to be useful on most gas engines.
