Ram air?

Hi guys and gals,
Since I am going to use the 1989 GTA for road race and solo races I was thingking of making a un-typical ram air system. How about deleting the retractable headlights and make a pair of carbon fiber induction ducts that would take place instead of the headlights? Each duct with a 4" dia. flexible hose to feed each turbocharger. The idea is that when is closed it looks stock, but when you push the headlight switch a pair of intake ducts would be revealed on each side. So imagine this; You are cruising down the express way and then suddenly a Mudstain wants to race you, pop up the headlight/ram air system and off you go! That thing would be feeding the turbos the ram air way! I will keep the fog lights, so I will be able to illuminate my way thru the night.
This is just some day dreaming of mine, any suggestions/ideas are appreciated.

I also do think is cool isn't it
I think that it may need to have the hoses pointing downward when closed, I believe they will breath Ok like that.

Huh, first thought… is that legal down there? I put 55W bulbs in my fog lights on my ’97 and have plenty of light to drive without the headlights on , but I’ve been pulled over and warned about it and have never managed to get clarification on if it’s legal around here.

WRT to air… you’ll have plenty if you take air from anyplace in front of the radiator, but the higher the inlet the cooler the air. If you want to mount it behind where the headlight doors are then do that, but don’t bother with the flip up deal… it will cause more drag then you’ll gain from the ram air, and you’ll actually have plenty of flow from just the little space that you have with the lights closed. Remember that the trick to making these things work well (well, functional, you’re not going to get any measurable improvement at road speeds no matter what you do from anything but the cooler inlet air) remember that you need to have a much larger chamber behind the inlet to slow/diffuse the air.

Hi 83 Crossfire TA,

Running at night with fog lights only can get you in trouble with cops in here also, but since I will be using the car mostly during the day at road races and solo events I dont mind getting rid of the headlights. I also plan on modifying the opening mechanism so that it wont open much, probably 1/2 way open or so.

I also want to add some cooling ducts to the front brake calipers using the fog light openings since I dont have any fog lights 'cause the intercooler being so big it dosent give enough space for the fog light assembly. But now that I want to do the headlight delete/ram air mod, I'll have to install the fog lights again in their stock location and use this as an excuse to get rid of the current IC and get a new IC with twin entry/one outlet for the TT project I guess I'll be using the front grills then for the brake cooling efect.

You could always use NACA ducts under the sides of the nose (actually, I'm not sure that those areas are covered on the GTA's, but either way, outside the original "radiator duct"

Yes, thank's for reminding me! I have a 3" dia hole underneath the front bumper exactly where you mentioned. I used to get cold air for the intake track on the past. I am going to get the two NACA ducts and re-work those panels. Seems that It's been too long since I dont work on my car, I am forgeting how it looks like!!
