The last time I had my bottle filled the guy said that I needed to have it recertified. He said the bottle was old and it needed to be tested. has anyone ever heard of this?
He said to contact the fire dept. about how to have it tested. He filled it that one time and said if anyone asks you didn't fill it here.
Any ideas?

This wasn't a shady place. It was actually a reputable machine shop here in Cleveland. Thats why I was curious if it was true.

 

Never heard of it. If your bottle looks pretty beat up a lot of places won't want to fill it. A friend of mine works at Schuck's and had a bottle explode on him while he was filling it. He didn't get hurt, but now they turn away any suspect looking bottles.

 

Mine is actually in great condition. I think I will just try elsewhere next time.

Try asking a local welding supplier if they can tell you who can recertify it for you.

DOT would make it federal, I assume. Don't ask me, it's your country, not mine.

 

We used to have to have our high pressure paintball tanks tested also. We usually just sold them instead of having them checked. They were pretty cheap. Now that I think back having a carbon fiber wrapped nitrogen filled tank wasn't that safe. We had 5000psi touching our face while shooting. If those tanks busted something bad could have happened.

 

It's called hydrostatic testing, and it's a periodic requirement for pressurized cylinders like fire extinguishers, scuba tanks, and so forth. IIRC, most new cylinders must be tested after 10 years, then every five years thereafter. The legal requirement stems from DOT and OSHA regs, and NFPA fire codes, etc.

I'd bet that any fire safety equipment vendor in your local yellow pages will either be able to do a hydrostat test themselves, or they will have a close working relationship with another outfit that can.

n2o bottles do have to be recertified but what i had a question on was the sticker thats on the tank. i removed mine because its going to be painted and luckily the bottles still full but when its empty and i go to get it refilled do i have to get a new sticker????

 

I was able to get mine refilled without the proper sticker. I took it off to polish the tank.

 

thats good news. i guess it really depends on who ever fills it.

 

I found a place that hyrostatic tests bottles!!!
It is less than a mile from my house.
$22 and 2-3 day turn around.

i deal with fire inspection businesses all the time ( i write software for some of them)....

look under fire inspection or fire extinguishers in the phone book, they should be able to hydrotest and DOT certify and stamp them for a reasonably cheap price... and they're all over the country. almost every business has a fire safety company that comes in and keeps them legal

 

I had the same problem with an old bottle I bought off of ebay, and nitrous bottles are supposed to be recertified every 5 years, and the sitcker dosen't matter except for the tank size full and empty, the certification is stamped into the bottle near the neck. and I had mine done at the local speed shop they send them out and I had it back in 3 days, another local gas supply house could have done it in a week.

 

Let me vent to you guys,

I took the bottle in last tues. he told me I will have it by fri. so he calls friday and everything is cool.
I go to pick up the bottle, the guy sets it on the counter and my heart dropped, the **** was busted in two, the sticker was barely on the bottle, and the valve itself was mangled!!!
It had a few scratches on the bottle which sucks (I polished the bottle by hand) but I would have looked past that. The F-ed up valve was too much.
I can a little loud with the guys behind the counter and demanded my bottle be fixed.
The only explanation that I got from the guys was, well we send them out and I didn't notice the damage when I took it off the truck.
Call me crazy but a busted **** is pretty hard to miss especially when half of it is missing.
So now the idiots are ordering a new valve for me. I now have to wait till friday to get it back.
I am going to have the morons take the new valve off to show me that they got the siphon tube mounted right.
I am still waiting to see if they will charge me for the service too.
