Top Mount Intercooler?
DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A WAY TO MOUNT AN INTERCOOLER ON TOP OF THE INTAKE MANIFOLD FOR A TURBO THIRD GEN T/A, LIKE THE SETUP ON THE SUBARU STI .......
I ASK BECAUSE IT SEEMS LIKE IT MIGHT BE LESS PIPING AND WOULD WORK GOOD ON A SS HOOD WITH ALL THAT DIRECT AIR COMING THRU THE CENTER SCOOP.TOP MOUNT INTERCOOLER

Anything is possible, you would have to custom make the intercooler piping, but same thing goes for a front mount. I know some guys with WRX's and my old car also had a top mount (85 Ford SVO), majority of the people with top mounts switch to a front mount because its more effecient at cooling. With the top mount the intercooler is sitting above the engine, so it catches the engine bay heat. I also imagine it would cause some clearance issues with the hood on a 3rd gen, guess it would depend on the intake. But hey you never know until you try, so if you really want it then go for it.

to quote Irocz4me:
These are the problems with the factory SVO IC... (WHICH IS A TMI)
It is too small even for the 2.3 l engine. That is the reason for the cheap turbocoupe IC upgrade, toget a little bigger IC that is cheap easy to find and basicaly bolt in. But it still isn't very good. Even this upgrade is not enough for a descent running 2.3l.
On top of that is the problem of heat rising to the top of the engine compartment, especially at stand still and slow speed.
The next problem occurs at high speed. The air intake (hood scoop) isn't in a place of particularly high air pressure. When you get to around 40+MPH the air pressure under the hood nearly equalls the pressure in the hood scoop. Basicly you get little or no airflow across the IC. All of those problems could be worked out but the easiest route is to put a nice large efficient IC in front of the radiator in a high pressure/high air flow area
