Can my car run with a supercharger?
I am curious to see if my car can run with a supercharger successfully. If it can, how much boost can be applied? Do I have to rebuild the engine to handle the supercharger? Or is it almost to the point of slapping it on, making few adjustments and you're set? I am getting tired of getting kicked around by normal cars... (Yes, normal cars...) Basically, I want to know is what has to be done to make my car be able to handle a SC. I want to mod my car accordingly. Thanks!
BTW, my car has 75,000 miles... totally stock... 305 engine with automatic transmission. It's a convertible, if that changes anything...

Humvee,
The virtue of adding a supercharger to your engine will be an immediate, substantial gain in horsepower and torque. More air simply means more power. Unfortunately, this also adds a lot of stress to the working components of the engine.
If you were to rebuild the engine specifically with a supercharger in mind, use as many high quality components as possible, and get the work proffesionally done. Decreasing compression ratios to about 8.5 - 1 will enhance the supercharging effect. This also brings in the computer problem with the TPI system, so a new chip will likely have to be burned.
Hope this helps,
Doug E

Well, since your engine is TPI, I think you'll have to go with a centrifugal supercharger instead of a roots type. The centrifugal kind might be more difficult to install and tune, but I don't think you'd have to rebuild the engine or anything, just so long as you keep the boost low (around 6-8 lbs maybe). This engine has something like 9:1 compression, right? You might have to use bigger injectors, but that's probably about it. I have heard of guys who supercharged their 305 TPIs, but I don't know if there are any of 'em around here on this board.

Ah yes, Willie, you're the guy I had in mind. Running 12s with a 305 that's a daily driver and emissions legal, that impresses the hell outta me!
