Need help with plans for my 383

This winter I'm building up my 350 block. I have a TRW forged flat-tops (9.6:1 CR with 64cc heads, but I'm running 70cc heads) and 5.7" reconditioned rods from a 4 bolt main '69 camaro with new bolts and I'm not sure about the crank yet, but anyways...

I'm hoping for around 500hp at the crank when it's all said and done, but I'd like to add a 150 shot to that when I'm at the track ocassionally just to play with the stuff...(maybe once a month)

Should I still be building the engine around the nitrous use with minimual usage. Please tell me what I need in order to make sure my 383 will last...

Thanks.

It's worth the money to go ahead and get a Scat or Eagle cast "steel" crank. I would'nt build the engine around the NOS usage simply because I don't like giving up HP for any reason... Especially when MOST of the time it will be run without it. 500 HP should be EASILY obtainable with a 383. Since your carbed, you don't have to worry about making the computer happy with the cam, so you could REALLY take advantage of todays more agressive roller designs but still stay reasonable on the lift #'s in order to be a little easier on the valvetrain.

Thanks Doug...you told me exactly what I wanted to hear Scat was definetly on my mind about the crank...

I think if I get one of those Progressive nitrous controllers I'm not going to worry about it too much if I retard the timing and get colder plugs...

BTW, I'm hoping a lot of that 500hp will be from the Victor Jr. 23* heads I'm planning on getting...Edelbrock states they're good from 530-580 horses right out the box! I'm thinking a matching Victor Jr. intake and a BG Speed Demon 850 w/ mechanical secondaries will get me awful close to my 500hp mark.

Any suggestions about a cam.?..I wouldn't mind running something pretty wild, because I don't drive it often enough to keep it tame for the streets

I believe The Edelbrock heads a fully capable of making good power but I wouldn't simply because, from what I've heard, they require the use of "Shaft-style" rockers like the Jesel, T & D, or similar pieces.. Those damn things are $$$$$$$!!!!!!! That's why I chose the Canfield 220's...
