383 TBI

I may be in the wrong form but I'm woundering if I build a 383 for towing torque only with stock tbi heads and mild cam would it need a tune right away to keep it together or tune to just get the most out of it. It's for a 86 k20 with sm465 and 4.10 gears on 33's. I'm goin to get the stuff to do my own tuning but don't know anything about it. I joined this form bc a lot of you guys know your stuff and I've read over few times on "come in for a free tune" and few other and want to learn it. First I'll play around with it on my other tbi motors till I'm comfortable unless I could go ahead with the build and drive it stock. I mostly pull few cars, fire wood and 8,000 camper.
Thanks

It's going to need a tune right away. Ask me how I know

The only thing I suggest to tbi modders is Rbob's EBL Flash. Greatest mod I did to my f-body

Thanks, I figured it would but wasn't sure. About the EBL flash, will I be able to use it from vehicle to vehicle or is it hard wired in. Is all I need is a cord and the EBL flash? Want to get the stuff soon and would like to get it right first time. I know no one that does any type of tuning to help me.

Re: 383 TBI

After looking around at the EBL flash it's soldered in and is part of the ECM? So I'm guessing no way to use it on one vehicle and then another?

Yeah it's a one ECM unit. If the cars are all the ECM# technically you 'could' use it for multiple cars. But that would entitle you to swapping the whole ECM in and out of the vehicle you want it in at that time. Which I'm not sure where it's located on the trucks but for F-bodies it's a 3min procedure.

Re: 383 TBI

The more I read the more lost I get.
I have 3 tbi engines. One of the 3 is the one I would like to learn on before I build the 383 for the truck. The truck is factory carbed so I could place the ECM anywhere.
So if I put the ECM in a place to be removed quickly from the tbi I learn with to the truck (that is only a work truck for the most part) that gets the 383 vs burning chips.
From what I've been looking at the EBL is alot faster to tune with but confined to one vehicle and burning chips is unlimited to how many vehicles.
Trying to stay ahead and get what's best for what I'm trying to do before I get into building the engine and not ready to tune it.
In the back of my mind I have a boat I could also switch from carb to tbi and my 54 that's already fuel injected but it's OBD2.
Is the EBL ECM worth switching around when I need the work truck or just burn chips?

Yeah if your going to want to use something for multiple cars a lot, not just one car at a time, then that might suit you better.

Re: 383 TBI

Can any ECM be tuned or is some beter than others. One of my trucks is 16173782 BDDJ.
I was goin to order the aldl to usb but wanted to be sure I get the right stuff, lil bit at a time. Looking at the one from reddevilriver that comes with driver. I caint find much on the ECM. Truck is a 93 s10 5 speed vin Z with engine from 95 astro vin W. Hasn't ran exactly right since I put it in but not noticeable to be the average Joe. This is the truck I wanted to learn tuning on before I have a 383 ready and no tune.
Everything is confusing on what I need. I think I will like the way of datalogging then edit and burn and repeat vs EBL or ostrich bc I can do more vehicles at a time even tho it would take a lot longer from what I've read. Also belive it would be additive for me.
I will probaly use EBL flash for the 383.
I've never done anything with a ECM and was always afraid of screwing up so I stuck with carbs but it's time for me to learn

I only really know about EBL as that's all I ever got into.

You'd be better off starting a new thread in the DIY PROM forum and asks these questions there. A lot of very smart guys hang around there I'm sure they'll give you some advice!
