Question about using nitrous and a mech fuel pump...

All the plate kits (goes between carb and manifold) I see have ports for the nitrous (blue) and and one for gas (red). This makes sense to add a bit of gas to the nitrous mix.

My question involves the gas. I run a Carter Street pump at 120 gph and 6psi and a Holley 750vac carb. I really don't want to have to buy an electric pump and regulator and stuff too. I am only looking to run a single 150HP shot and a window switch too. What are my options?

i've got asetup similar to yours and ended up adding aholley blue pump. before i added the nos ,i put on afuel pressure gauge, the mechanical pump would surge from time to time. the blue pump solved that problem, i'm about paranoid of the nos anyhow. if you put afuel pressure switch in your system set a #5 you should be alright.i'm adding aholley red pump this year just for the nitrous just to be safe

I agree with Craig on the use of a fuel pressure safety switch. Get one!

NX has the following recommendations for sizing your fuel pump based on ¼mile ET:

10.00 or slower = 110GPH or larger
9.00 to 9.99 = 250 GPH or larger
8.00 to 8.99 = 300 GPH or larger

NX also recommends using one fuel pressure regulator for the carb and a seperate fuel pressure regulator for the nitrous kits fuel solenoid.

Your pump has enough output volume but could stand to produce a little more pressure. It isn't necessary to change to an electric pump unless you want too, but a mechanical pump with more head pressure + the regulators will keep a steady pressure without surging or dropping pressure. Holley Part # 12-327-2 delivers 130 GPH at 7-9 PSI. That should be a good pump unless your car will be faster than 10.00 in the quarter. If it is faster then you do need a biger pump. Try to keep the head pressure over 7 PSI. More pressure gives your regulator something to work with to keep pressure stable. Most people set their regulator at 5-6 PSI, and tune from there.

I was thinking about a fuel pressure switch all ready (along with a window switch). I expect to be in the low 12s high 11s with a 150 shot, so I'll be OK there.

One suggestion was to also run a 5psi electric pump (Carter?) to help feed the mech pump and keep the psi more consistant.

So it looks like I'll need to get a pressure regulator and run a line to the nitrous plate? I guess my main question is about where does the fuel come from that goes to the red solenoid on the nitrous plate that fits under the carb?

if you use your mechanical pump , tee into the fuel line leading to the carb. put the pressure switch before the solenoid. be sure to check the switch , mine was set at 7# when i received it. i'm an instrument/electrician so i have access to the right equipment. i guess you could check it with an air gauge.

To plumb the fuel side:

From the output of the fuel pump attach a fuel filter.

After the filter, plumb in the fuel pressure safety switch.

After the FP switch, plumb in a T or Y fitting.

from one output of the above fitting, attach a fuel pressure regulator, and then a fuel pressure gauge fitting. Run this line to the Carb fuel inlet.

From the other output of the T or Y fitting attach a line to another fuel pressure regulator & fuel pressure gauge fitting. Run this line to the input of the fuel solenoid of the nitrous kit.

You're plumbed!

I highly recommend using fuel pressure regulators anyway but if you run two pumps in series it is absolutely nesiccary.
When you run pumps in series the flow volume dosen't add up but the pressure does. If one pump has a head pressure of 5 PSI and the next pump has a head pressure of 7 PSI then the ultimate pressure at the output of the last pump in series is 12 PSI.

If you are in doubt about the fuel feed to the pump then install ½ inch (# 8) feed line all the way from the pickup point in the tank to the inlet of the fuel pump.
