How bad is nitrous for your car?

I was considering getting nitrous for my car but if it's just going to tear the **** out of the engine I won't get it. Anybody know exactly what it does and how it works or how you could safeguard yourself from blowing your motor up?

I would look in the tech articles...But to make sure your motor does not explode, or kill it...Make sure you upgrade your fuel system. I went with a 255ltr/hr fuel pump, and a new fuel filter...make sure to replace ur fuel filter often....IMHO I think it is worth the investment. Took off over a second on my E.T. with 100shot.

No matter what you do, if you want to go faster, bolt on stuff is going to put more stress on a motor. As for nitrous, the way it works is it basically adds more burnable oxygen. Therfore you need to compensate it with more fuel. Too much fuel=ok!! Not enough fuel=bye-bye motor. Just be smart and follow what the manufacturer says, and you shouldn't have a problem.

The above posts are pretty much right.

Any time you add power to an engine you increase stresses.
Properly used, nitrous won't stress your engine much more than any other modification(s) making the same power.

The main concern with nitrous (or any other mod) is that the engine doesn't detonate (knock) under load.
Too much timing and/or not enough fuel will cause that.

Nitrous oxide is an oxidizer, and a nitrous kit adds fuel and nitrous to make more power.

The best way to safe guard a nitrous inhaling engine is:
  • know what your spark timing is, and have it set correctly. If the stock PROM (chip) Is still being used you will be ok with stock timing while using a nitrous kit up to around 150 HP. If you have an after market PROM you will need to reduce timing advance a few (2°-4° or so) degrees.
  • Make sure your fuel system is up to the task. The stock pump should be good up to a 125-150 HP (or so) kit. Beyond that a better pump is a good idea. A new fuel filter should be installed at the same time as the nitrous kit and it should be well maintained. Using a fuel pressure safety switch (available as an "add on") with the kit will prevent the nitrous from operating if fuel pressure isn't high enough.
  • Buy lots of replacement rear tires.
Strangely enough the tread seems to disapear until nothing is left but onion skins. LOL.
