Combustor inline with turbo

I saw about 8 to 10 months ago a picture from a buddy of mine who is in the military about taking a turbo hummer and putting a small turbine style combustor between the engine outlet and the inlet on the hot side of the turbo. This would make running a larger turbo and/or spinning a turbo at a much higher RPM without having to rev the engine as high. Could also cut WAY down on the spool time of the turbo. Anyone like the idea?

Well, the little IHI that they use on that 6.5L turbodiesel should spool just about instantly on that truck, so I’m not sure how much value that has there, but in general, its not a new idea. There are cars out there that dump extra gas/retard timing on the shifts to cause the gas to burn off in the exhaust to keep the turbo spooled…
