How important are BOVs????????

I'm running 5lbs of boost at 5000RPMs. I had a BOV on there but decided to plug it because I was afraid there was a leak there.

How important is it to have a BOV when you run only 5psi? What is the proper way for it to operate? Is it only supposed to bleed air between gears? or upon acceleration?

With 5psi, you do not need a bypass valve. It's main purpose is to eliminate reversion air from travelling back through the compressor. This happens when lifting off the throttle. Reversion air will slow down the compressor wheel and cause an excessive load on the bearing. Bad for the bearing! It's secondary purpose is to increase compressor wheel response between gears when you route the bypass valve discharge into the air inlet entering the compressor. This is not as important on a supercharger which uses a belt to turn the compressor wheel. I wouldn't bother using a bypass valve on a supercharger unless I was making at least 15psi of boost or more.

I might put the BOV back on. Any excessive strain on the bearings that doesnt need to be there is NOT going to be there. We all know about the reliability of these Paxtons

Procharged: Don't know. If you're bypass valve was closed, you should make 12 psi of boost. If it was stuck open, then you would have trouble. Not all the compressed air would be reaching the throttle body. Depending on where you vented the valve, the MAF may have been getting goofy airflow readings also.

i meant stuck closed at idle. probably right....since the bypass is BEFORE the MAF...then it was probably reading high when it was stuck closed.
