NOS, how does it work? How to properly install?

Can somebody help me out? I see lots of NOS this and NOS that on the forums, but realy don't know much about it. I think I get the basics, buy a system from a reputable company and install it on my car to make it go faster.

My questions are: 1) Which system do I get. 2) Is everything I need included in the kit?

My engine specifics: Chevy 305 H.O. block and bottom end, 350 cam and lifters, 305 heads (came with the H.O. block but I don't know if they are for the H.O. - NOT center bolt style valve covers), Edelbrock 600 cfm carb, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, distributor/ignition from a '76 Vette, headers with side-pipe duel exhaust.

My car specs: '82 Firebird, above mentioned engine, TH350 tranny build for performance, posi rear-end from '87 IROC (3.45:1 ratio with disc brakes).

I'm hoping to get the car into the 12's. What would you recommend?

The way I figured out about Nitrous Oxide (NOS is a brand name like Band-Aid) and what I needed was to read as much as possible about it. Luckily, the internet is full of message boards and sites that you can read about the use of N20. By reading these boards I was able to put together a safe N20 system myself. You could also get a book or talk to people at the track.

But to (kind of) answer your questions:

1. You would need a kit with a plate that will fit your carb unless you are planning some trick fogger setup. I don't know much about carbs, but I assume your edlebrock has the same bolt pattern as a holley 4barrel? Then use a kit with a plate for holley carbs. These kits are usually adjustable to over 100hp and are pretty cheap.

2. Kits usually have enough in them to allow you to use nitrous, but that's about it. No safety or convienence items like bottle heater, purge, window switch, fp safety switch, remote opener, etc..

To learn how nitrous works go to http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...S/catalog.html and click on tech articles. It has a great explanation on the do's and don'ts of Nitrous. There are a ton of systems for a carb. You might want to look into an Electronic nitrous controller like Jacob's Electronics' Nitrous Mastermind which almost safeguards your engine from blowing up. Good luck.
