Q's on DIY Remote Mount Turbo

1. I have a 5.7 TPI and I'm building my own RMT. I was wondering what type of electric pump are you guys running for the turbo oil return line?

2. Where do you tap for oil pressure? Can I T it off at the oil pressure switch above the oil filter?

3. As far as oil return, where do you tap for that line? I'd like to stay away from tapping the oil pan if necessary. Valve cover, oil fill cap?

Thanks for any help.

Joe

The Mocal/Tilton diff pumps are solid. Basically a Shur-flo with high temp internals. The turbo really doesn't need much oil flow at all, since it's just a tiny bearing for the shaft. The oil can come from wherever it's convenient - boss above the filter, rear plug at the intake manifold, oil pressure sender... If you've got the oil draining into a sump that is pumped out, then it can go anywhere - valve cover, oilpan, intake valley, etc...

Ditto^

I've been running a RMT system on my daily driven Z24 for about 2 years and 24,000 miles now, including 2 doizen or so 12 second quarter mile runs (the car is so much fun ). I've been running the SHURflo 8000-643-236 pump which has been working out well, but I recommend the Tilton pumps because they have a higher temp rating (240 vs 180°F IIRC).

FWIW, I would Tee off for oil pressure at the oil pressure sending unit just above the oil filter, and return the oil into the valve cover. Also, you will want to run a turbo timer or a time delay relay that will run the scavenge pump for 30-60 seconds after the engine is shut down. I noticed that without this run-on of the scavenge pump, I would get some smoke upon engine restart. You can get cheap turbo timers off eBay for like $25.

These have been looked at for this application. I was always curious how to run the intake tube up to the engine compartment, care to enlighten me?

That pump does not work. That was the first one I tried. Next, I tried a 6.5 TD fuel lift pump, which did not have enough flow capacity (it worked while idling, but after a second or two at WOT oil smoke out the exhaust).

I think I've proven that the $90 SHURflo is up to the task. The ~$180 Tilton/Mocal pump is similar in design and operation of the SHURflo, but is rated at a higher temp and therefore is the one I would suggest.

What size is the thread for the oil pressure switch above the oil filter? Is it 1/8" NPT?

The thread size on the port above the oil filter was 1/4NPT on my IROC, IIRC.

water cooled turbo

when using a water cooled turbo in a remote turbo setup is it important to use water or can i go without and not overheat the center section of the turbo

You won't need the water cooling. I ran the water ports just open to air my Z24 RMT when I was running the Volvo T3- it was an air cooled turbo LOL. Actually, my current turbo, the T3/T4 hybrid, was new from the ground up so I just ordered it with a dry center.

Did anyone ever use a restrictor for the oil line feed into the turbo? Some people use nitrous jets to limit the amount of oil going into the turbo bearing. Is this applicable in a RMT?

I don't see any reason to use an oil restrictor. I have 1/4" OD brake tubing all the way back to my turbo with no restrictions. I've never understood why some people say you need a restrictor in the feed line? I presume they are compensating for a less than idea oil drain/scavenge system.

Re: Q's on DIY Remote Mount Turbo

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but I have my car in the process of setting up a remote mount, I'm just waiting on the shurflo to come in. But my question was, do you have to add any extra oil to the car to compensate for the oil running to the turbo and back?
thanks John

Re: Q's on DIY Remote Mount Turbo

yes, you do have to add a little extra oil to compensate the feed line, pump, and the return line. I installed a larger pan and deeper pick up when I did mine.

On some turbo setups (like ballbearing) they are required. Turbos do not require tons of oil. Just clean and cool oil. The best people to ask if your specific application requires one is to call the manufacturer and ask.
