Yet another dreamed up TT camaro...
well i finally got my new motor in and done after 1.5years of slowly hacking on it. And well, 380hp (on a cold day with a tailwind
) at the fly just isnt enough get-up-and-go for me i guess.I dont see a heck of alot of carbed turbo threads here so i think im starting off in the wrong direction from the start!
So now im looking at doing a twin turbo setup. Im not too knowlegable at the forced induction thing so bear with me...
A guy was telling me once that if i ever did a twin turbo one should be fairly small and the other turbo bigger. I believe he called it sequential turbo's or something, basically his idea was the smaller turbo got the engine into boost at low RPM while the bigger one spooled up supposedly making for one heck of a wild motor.
Was his theory valaid or should i just be looking to get a matching pair?
What about doing this with a blow through carb setup?
EFI is damn expensive for an aftermarket unit and theirs no possibility of picking up a used TPI around here...
Also, im looking at these TT headers on ebay. Item #8075221557
Anyone used these? Im just wondering about quality/fitment, they seem to be pretty nice looking pieces for the price!
I see another long project coming on!

well i'm not really well educated with turbos but usually everyone installs matching turbos so it's symmetrical (you would probably make more power with 2 bigger turbos anyways) but having a smaller turbo to compensate for turbo lag does make sense, although there would still be a bit of lag. i had an idea to use a pair of shorty headers for turbos, just install them upside down. but this would stick your turbos out of your hood. i dunno how good that would look. i know more educated people will help you though.

Id go with twin 60/63 T3s if your looking to do twins.
Ive heard good and bad about SSAUTOCHROME so i dont have a oppinion about them. Im really good friends with a fabricator and he said for the price SSAUTOCHROME charges for those and all the other ones they build. They are DIRT CHEAP. supplies alone for SS cost more then the buy it now price.

Alright, i guess if i do go trough with this ill use matching turbos.
For those headers, thats exactly what i though. SS isnt cheap at all and these are not much more expensive than a set of conventional shorty or long tubes. One of those too good to be tru things im thinking, but ya never know.
Any input on using blow through carb setup? From what i have seen (or lack thereof) it doesnt look too popular...

sequential turbo's - think mazda rotary, circa 1991 ish. They used them stock, only time i've seen 'em at least. Yea, they worked well to make power over the entire powerband. Gives more throttle response like a blower i'd guess.
carb - you get either blow through, or draw through. I think drawthrough is unpopular due to fuel in the turbo, wearing it out Uber fast.
blow through - check out what the stock turbo TA in 1981 used. That was a blowthrough 800CFM quadrajet. There was a member here who was fabbing that turbo setup onto a 350 I think. Took a lot of flak from the "turbo snobs"
and i'm not sure if it worked.
Basically you need to completely seal the carb from atmospheric air, or make sure the power valve/power piston, whatever, is boost referenced. I did some online searches a while ago to find out what makes a boost referenced carb what it is. Not overly complicated.
Take your car to the strip? I really don't think you're up at 380HP, maybe 330HP, but either way, if it doesn't feel wicked fast, i'd say you still have more carb tuning to do.... (unless you're accustomed to that level of power, and KNOW that you're feeling 300+HP and are still disappointed...)
I think my motor *may* make 350HP, and i'm pretty sure i'm not even close to 300HP, with my state of tune...

Supposedly the motor will put out 380hp (at the fly obviously) maybe 300 at the wheels...
Now i know for sure its not doing that at the moment, gotta love edelbrock carbs
. Im actually surprised that it has the power it does on a stock jetted 1406 carb, the front end gets pretty light!
But i know that even in a proper state of tune i just dont think its going to be enough fun to drive. I have drove a few cars around 300hp at the wheels and this feels pretty close so i know the new motor ist too far down on power.
But heck, who cant like the sound of a couple turbos spooling up then the almight PHSSSSSSSSSTTTTT as the BOV tries to save the turbos from flying apart as i let off the gas and mash the brakes because cops just came around the corner
I think i want to try something in the insane ammount of power region now. my buddys looking for a motor for his truck and hes interested in my new build so that could definately be a start on the TT setup. Then my other buddy is on his way to building one he|| of a first gen maro, hes doing a '69 from the ground up EVERYTHING NEW! drivetrain is going to consist of a crate 572, its going to be one wild ride. so i need something to try and keep up!
Im thinking maybe purchasing something along the lines of this http://www.vortechsuperchargers.com/...carb_encl.html
should simplify the carbed part of it i think. Just plumb from the turbos to the box and hope it doesnt explode

First turbo setup for ya. It all depends on the HP level you want. A single turbo is the most simple and will spool well for a street setup if chosen properly and you are not after 800+ HP.
Twin turbo is OK for a first turbo setup. I went that route for my first boosted rig. I did it because 4/6 cyl junkyard turbos are readily available. When chosen properly it will spool quick and give good street HP.
Sequential turbos. Great idea. Very hard to implement. The control mechanism is a nightmare. In your case, stay away from them. You would be better off using a variable vane turbine if you want to persue that route. Or make a valve for a dual scroll turbine and control that.
In terms of headers. Do a search for 89JYTurbo and my username. We both use stock TPI exhaust manifolds that were modified. I got the idea from him. I had about $50 in material to make them. The car is at about 450 FWHP right now with 7 PSI of boost. I wouldn't be surpised if they flowed well enough for 600 FHWP or more.
Take your time, research, and choose parts carefully. The diesel world has a lot to offer if you spend the time researching what is out there.
Look at www.turbomustangs.com for the carb info. Lots of people run boosted carbs there. Not many run that setup around here.

Well i want to see if i can hit the 600hp level with this.
This isnt something im going to jump out and do tomorrow. this will be something i will start gathering all (yea right huh?) the parts over the summer and start chopping into the car in the winter months and hopefully be done for the spring!
Im pretty leary of JY turbos, up here their few and far between and they look to be in pretty rough shape. So im considdering the possibility of grabbing some new ones. So ill definately get this thing figured out 100% before i pull the trigger on $4000 worth of turbos!
Another possibility instead of using the pay for building that first gen for a TT 350 i could go grab a BBC and single turbo it. But i think that would be too much of a PITA, Keep it simple!
Ahhh yes, exacly what i was looking for. Saves using that great big box and probably costs less than the box too! http://www.barrygrant.com/news/artic...oduct_015.aspx

You have the right idea. Collect up the parts slowly and take your time building it. You could get away a pair of Garrett 60 trim T3s for 600 FWHP but that is pushing it. That is what I am running on my Camaro. They are running at about 65% efficiency. I paid about $200 each from the junkyard.
If I knew as much about turbos then as I do know (not saying I know a lot) I would have went with a single turbo. It is less work and less money for the same HP and spool time if done properly. Take a look at the Holset HX40 series and the Garrett GT42 series. The Garrett turbo website has really been improved. All of the maps are there for the GT series and lots of good tech info on how to choose a turbo for your application.
A lot of people at the mustang site like the CSU carbs and products. You might want to check out their site for the bonnet and possibly carb parts.

awesome thanks alot!
This looks like one heck of a can of worms to open up, hopefully it would be worth the work. i dont want to go through all this then turn around and kick myself in the **** for not buying a blower and getting the same results but only with a weekends worth of work!

TT setups aren't all that bad, just requires a lot of fab work. Definitely go blow through if you are staying carbed. Be warned however, it is a PITA to tune!!! Invest in a wideband O2, much cheaoer than a motor or two while you try and figure it out. It is definitely doable though. We did a tt setup on a carbed 383 in my partners 83z. We had so much fun with it on pump gas at 7 lbs. we built a real bottom end and converted to efi, hopefully it will be up and running again in a week or two...

Blowthrough Carb How-To
this should help a little
turbo mustangs has a huge blow thru section with many people in the sub 10 sec range(a bunch of street cars in that area too).

Awesome, thanks guys.
But now that ive been looking further into this it may go on the back burner, y'know the 5 year plan...
I dont really want to be forever pissing around trying to keep a blow through carb tuned properly, i think that EFI would be the way to go as this is a daily driver and im not overly concerned about trying to get 20mpg but i dont want to have to fill up once on the way to work and again after work!
I think for this summer its going to be a weiand pro street 250 blower. if all goes well its a weekend job to put the blower on and swap on some bigger chamber heads. It would never be the same as the TT but its got the eyecandy! Gas mileage is probably going to be brutal too...

Blower works just as well. With it setup right you can get good MPG. Have to hack up a hood though.
The broken manifolds.........just what I had guessed. Poor quality materials. Lots of people want to but them and re-weld. Those pics show that re-welding won't help.
It looked like the downpipe or something goes into the firewall. I wonder if restricted movement helped break it. Just guessing here.

I have seen quite a few pics of the failures, and most of the ones i saw were actual metal fatigue like you say, not shabby welds.
Im not scared of chopping up the hood for a blower. Its only the stocker, and even if it was a fancy cowl hood i wouldnt care because having that big chunk of eye candy sticking out of there is going to look kicka$$!
