what exactly is a hybrid?

I know this sounds basic, but what specifically is a hybrid turbo??? I see it everywhere but I really dont know what it is. Such as a T3/T4 Turbocharger...Is it a T3 turbine housing with a T4 compressor or the other way or what??

Ok. Thats what I thought...But can any compressor or turbine sections from different t3s and t4s be put together and labeled a T3/T4 hybrid?

A T3/T4 hybrid is usually a T3 turbine and a T4 compressor. This allows improved spooling compared to a T4 and improved top end compared to a T3. It's sort of a compromise, not to say it doesn't work VERY well if matched properly. These work well on 4/6 cylinders as a single and small-mid size V8s with a twin configuration, perhaps a single if your V8 were anemic enough (267, 305 etc) Building a hybrid turbo can be done with off the shelf parts with no modifications to the components, by a reputable dealer or hell you could build one yourself from parts and have it balanced.
I've seen some people selling T4 hot sides with T3 compressors; anyone selling a turbo like this is running a scam or is a moron, avoid at all costs if you value your money.

I've seen them too. those are the left overparts when someone buys two turbos (a t3 and a t4) and makes a hybrid out of parts from each. unless they're re-balancing the shafts... neither of the mis-matched turbos are going to last long.
