questions about nitrous...yes i searched!
I posted another thread about other ppl's experiences ab nitrous in the HSR intake and after reading a little bit on the laughing gas,
i have a few questions that i hope can be answered..
do i need all the other kits that are sold seperately from the actual nitrous kit ( like the purging kit and bottle warmer and such)?
what happens if i dont use the other kits (named kits above)? or are they just nice to have ?
do i need two chips for my car if i run nitrous? one for when i run nitrous and one when i go n/a?

I dont think bottle warmers are included and are definately nice to have. keep pressure up to make sure your getting the right shot.
not sure if purge is included but it would make sense that it is ina good kit
as far as chips, mainly with nitrous you want to retard timing 2 degrees for every 50 shot they say. so if you run a 150 shot you want to retard 6 degrees which will make n/a power kinda weak.
So if you can, make 2 chips one with less timing overall and one for n/a power. JUST remember which one you have in the car when your ready to spray LOL

Well lets see if we can answer your questions.
Purge Kit
-Purge kits are fun for showing off. Completely un necessary. Actully your just wasting nitrous. The only time you will have air in your lines is when you reinstall the bottle after a fill. Even then there is only a split second to get the air out of the system.
Bottle Heater
-This is a must. You need this to maintain bottle pressure. I personally run a zex bottle heater. You can find them on ebay for about $110 shipped. I like the zex one cause its a contained unit. No external relay or extra wires. There are two wires. A positive and a ground. The temp sensor is built in.
Timing
-As for timing. You do need to pull timing out when spraying. There are two ways to go about this. You can get two chips, a flip chip from Moates.net, or an msd timing control box. Or the really cheap way move the distributor. How much are you going to spray? 6 degrees seems like alot of timing to pull. If you read some of the install kit instructions you will see that the manufacture recomends not changeing the thing if its stock. I have personally read in the NOS kit that pulling timing is not necessary on a stock application. But pulling timing is safer. If you go with two chips you will have to switch them manually. Moates can set you up with a chip that can hold more then one tune. If you get the msd box you can control it with a external controler.
Well I hope that helps.

As far as timing, as mentioned pulling timing is safer but on a V8, up to 150 shot, not necessary. I ran for a long time with full timing on a 150 shot with no problems. Better to be conservative, but 6* is really too much timing to pull at this level IMO. Consider 2* to 4*.
I agree with the bottle heater. If you ever run in colder weather you will be dissapointed with the performance as you won't have optimal pressure in the nitrous bottle.
In addition to the hobbs switch (fuel pressure safety switch) mentioned above, I would also recommend some version of a window switch. This will allow you to put your foot to the floor but the nitrous will only activate between a certain rpm range (window). For example, you can set your switch to activate at 3000 rpm and shut off at 6000 rpm. Otherwise, you will need to control your foot and not go WOT until at a safe RPM (3k for example). This is a great feat of self-control when the adrenaline is pumping ;-). The window switch will let you focus on your driving and is a safety device of sorts.
I started by installing a basic kit and added accessories as I went. Have fun!

I won't dispute that it isn't necessary; I ran nitrous for quite a while without one. The purge kit however is not to get air out of the system (with the exception that you noted). It is to bring liquid nitrous up to the nitrous solenoid. As the liquid nitrous sits in the lines it will turn from a liquid form to a gas form. With a typical kit having 12-14 feet of line between the bottle and solenoid, it will take a second or two to get rid of the gas and have the liquid nitrous up to the solenoid. Until the nitrous in gas form is removed, you will have an overly rich condition. In my case, this usually resulted in a rich 'bog' when I triggered the nitrous. Again, this did not necessarily cause problems but was sub-optimal. Just thought I would clarify a bit.
