This is semi theoretical, but can I piece togeather a rear mount turbo 4 around $1K?

Well the tittle says it all. I am happy with the power my car makes for the most part. I am getting a new cam and slapping on an RPM air-gap real soon to help bring the power on a little earlier. I also have about $1000 I "may" be able to spend on other stuff. If I get a used/rebuilt GOOD turbo do you guys think I can get my car running with a few PSI (less than 6) for less than a grand?

I can weld and piece togeather pipes and stuff like that. I have a LARGE fuel supply and have a 4" exhaust. My internals are all forged and I have Al. heads. Comp ratio is around 10, but I am not 100% sure. motor is a hydrolic roller 386. Carbed. My grand doesn't include the price of modding the carb.

I can still buy a different cam if need be since I am swapping that out soon.

I just want the adjustability and added power of the turbo without changing my headers and so on.

Can I get a cheap oil pump? What have people run in the past to do this? Lines are cheap and so it piping. I am talking non-intercooled since it is very low PSI. I just don't want to rip into the motor at all. If I have to, i am not going to even bother with the idea.

I would only consider running a thicker head gasket. Car has a booste ref reg. and 8- AN feed lines.

Possible or no?

when it comes down to it, you really dont want to cheap out on this sort of stuff. Depending on what turbo you want, you would be spending a good portion of the money on that and the carb would take up damn near the rest. Your t-56 should be fine with just 6 lbs of boost as long as you dont abuse it all the time.

What about running spray and pocketing the rest of the money?

I have spray right now. I have only played with a 100 shot but the motor can take up to 300 around there due to the forged internals. I have a 200 shot I am going to play around with on the dyno in a couple weeks to see how that it. But in the end I would like to have something a little more permanent.

It is all theory, i would rather just keep the $ in the bank, but if someone said, "yeah, you can get a nice turbo for $500 and a an oil pump for $100 and $300 to mod your 750 Holley DP" Then I would strongly consider the idea.

If the cost of all these things are going to be that x2, then forget it and I will play with spray for a few years while I want to get out of school.

The car makes 344 RWHP and 340 RWTQ. (N/A)

i kinda want something more like 400-450. So I really only need a little booste. 6 is probably too much. can't I get a turbo from a SAAb or something and make a few PSI?

Oh and this is a 100% street car. I drive it to work everyday. Comes off the road in the winter.

in short no....keep the nitrous, and your NA friendly cam and play around with that. a dual plane intake isn't boost friendly either, if you had a vic. jr or similar then maybe, but that 4" exhaust isn't what you'd want either. Stick with what you got and send me half the $$ you would have wasted and we'll call it even.

a saab turbo is as big as your fist, it would choke your power up top, especially mounting it in the rear with that 4" exhaust. With 6 psi and a decent turbo you might see 400. Personally, I wouldnt do it, but you could. I'd personally take advantage of those forged internals and get a bigger cam, and better intake manifold, you would be much happier with those imho.

I have a HUGE cam right now. it is too big acctually. The thing has a very choppy idle and I make only 9" of vac at idle. It is a 246/254 duration cam. I am going with a 230/236 duration cam next and swapping my vic jr. for a RPM air-gap. I want to make this thing more streetable but don't want it to loose its *****.

I figure setting up the N20 to run prefect will be fun to do. I dunno where I am going to use it though, haha. I tried it once on the higway, going from 70-90 for a few seconds. That was fun. I want to try and use it down low though.

My car feels very fast when it is spun up, I want it to feel that fast with less RPM, thats why the smaller cam and dual plane.

i guess the small turbo idea is strupid. Forget it. I will save the $ and toss it into the " down payment on a house" foundation.

Then later down the road I will build an LSX or something.
