Here's pictures of the 5" downpipe I've got on my 86 Camaro I just got it coated last week. They did a nice job with it.
Hope the engine comes back from the Machiene shop in the next few weeks so I can get it back running. I should be 10.50's on 93oct. with 18psi.
Here's a few pic's of the pipe and how it was before coating.

WOW! thats a slick car!
ok sorry but no pics tonight, my dad took the camera home with him when he left the shop, so i had no camera, lol
but i got the hotside done, other than smoothing out the metal, cleaning coating.
also got the o2 sensor fitting welded in the downpipe.
i got the wastegate flanges welded up, just have to cut a hole and weld it to the hotside.
got my oil return line also.now im just in need of a pressure line

WOWOW i like that white car so clean. i have a question if u have a twin turbo unhood is the a overheat danger and how would u change the spark plug because all the setups i see was a over headers set up but my friend is working on a setup where the turbos are in the space in the front of his 1992 firebird where the battery and the overflow tank and vapor can is and cut heat vents in the fender and ordered a hood with custom vent over the turbos he cut out the bumper energy absorber plastic and puting two intercoolers there with the air filters in the middle of it i will post pictures when we start the work

Twins or single ... either way the only reason you'd have a over heating problems is not having a cooling system that is up to the task.
If you put the turbo/s too close to things your going to have heat issues with them unless you use heat sheilding. Heat is a part of having a exhaust driven power adder and you need to design it with that in mind. metal grows with alot of heat... that puts stress on jonts/tubes/connections/gaskets everything involved with the primary side of the system (pre-turbo)
If you don't put in proper parts in for that expansion plan on re-welding your stuff often since it will stress and fracture.

well i seen two firebirds both with a twin set up (some car club i was looking in too) and where the turbo where there was blown heat stains under the hood and the hood was sinking in between them and omg when it was in traffic during the summer the hood looked like it was melting i was just wonder becuase my friend has a hood with a air-brushed firebird icon on it and its suck i wanted to buy it of him but not have it messed up

Bandit, don’t get offended by this, but I’ve always been surprised by how butch some of the turbo setups out there are and run well… I’ve always pretty much insisted on daily driver reliability from everything I owned (probably why it takes me longer than a lot of things should), and would really wonder if I could successfully drive something like that home if I got it running fast at the track.
Good luck, I still want to see the big downpipe…

Thats a cool thing about forced induction, you can have some gross nasty turns and poor matching, and it will still make great power. I can't wait to put a cheap nasty one on my truck!
Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
hey 83 crossfire, theres no way this couldnt be streetable. i mean, the motor wont hit boost uptill the higher rpms so im fine as long as i keep my foot out of it. the cam will be small and so will the convertor, so no worries (other than tuning)

Dude your car makes me cream my pants.
I'll have more pictures when it go's back together this month. It should be a little cleaner this time with fresh paint on firewall/coresupport and everything on the exhaust being HPC Coated.
Thanks... uhh.. I think

Scott, do you have any angled pics like the first one (see below), but with the A/C delete box in place like the second? There was hardly any room when the downpipe was there w/out the box, and I'm curious to see if it's touching now with the box in place....

Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
This picture is a little better. I cut down the heater box in a U shape to form around the pipe. I'll take a picture again in the next few weeks as I get to put it back together now that my engine will be here friday. The heads still need some work.. they are at champion.
There is actually about 1/2 between downpipe and firewall. The one picture does not show that.. but there's room there. Never had it hit.
I'll take some better pic's and post them soon.
Thanks
Scott~

^ Definitely Scott, if you can get some closer pictures please post them. I'd rather run the downpipe in that location, but just might end up going in this direction though if it isn't too feasible with a 4" downpipe.....;

lol that was the idea i had for my old setup, and holycrap @ that 5 inch downpipe though i quess the 3.8 does leave more room then the sbc.has anyone tried using oval 4 inch tubing or any oval tubing for that matter.i belive the 4 inch oval is only 2.75 or 3 inch, ive got some laying around in a few diss sizes i could actually measure, though i do believe the sizes are listed on spintechs website

I got my short block back yesterday... I have to assemble it and then wait for the Heads and ECM (FAST) System.. had it upgraded to sequential.
In the next couple weeks I should have most of it back together. I'll post some new pics of everything back in it's place.
Thanks!
~Scott.
That black car looks nice.... And LOUD

Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
im back! its summer, and the work has started again. i coated the hotside today, and picked up my boost gauge and another narrowband o2 setup in charlotte at the autofair. both are cobalt gauges, and retail on them and the pillar pod totaled $305. i got them for 31, lol. that makes me feel better about spending too much on tubing.
but i got the gauges mounted in my car, and ran the hotside, minus the turbo, today.
i should have to oil lines finshed in the next couple days, then im just missing a carb hat and fuel pump.
so here what i have left.
1. oil feed line.
2. finish oil return line, plumb into the pan
3. build metal (tubing)part of cold side
4. fix the tranmission cooler lines
5. fix the upper radiator hose
5a. get a carb hat
6. then i get to run the car with the turbo on it (mockup car)
then i have to prepare the other car to accept all this stuff.

so heres some pics. i got to run the turbo today, without it hooked to the carb. the carb hat should be here tuesday. im getting there. i take the car to the track on saturday to see what it will run stock, and to get used to driving it at the track. should be interesting
btw, like the exhaust? should scare some people, lol

I'm sorry but I am going to agree with everyone else. There's no way you are going to be able to run that for very long like that without tearing something up. There will be NO way to tune the car with those crappy gauges and narrow band sensors. The sensors themselves are only accurate at 14.7:1 and you need to be around 12.5 or better for safety.
Plus I really hate to say it, but that turbo will not perform like you think it will. That turbo was speced for a 6 liter diesel inline 6. Not a 5 liter gas v8. Lag also won't save your drivetrain parts. They will still eventually die. Transmission first IMO.
Cool build, but I figured I would toss in a couple cents to hopefully save you a lot of money in the future.

Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
ive got a race prepped 700r4 thats going together in a few weeks, its my senior project at school, so the trans is no worry. and the rear end, i could care less. we've got 5 more of the things sitting around. yeah, the narrow bands risky, but the motors expendable too. this is strictly to go have some fun. besides, im up for the challenge

Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
haha, i was waiting on that!!!!
yeah, i was too lazy to move the starter cable to get it running, so i just flipped part of the downpipe upside down. i was wondering if anyone was going to say anything.

i've seem some, for lack of better words, "Interesting" designs. But i pretty much figured it could turn down and back. So you have it running now?
Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
no ive been working laying tile all week long, plus ive been sick, so i have no energy for the car. but i have tomorrow off, so i might get it running then, ill just have to see how things go. but i think all the parts are here, so it might happen tomorrow

Re: 4'' downpipe, anybody done it?, offical build post
yep, actually there is, i kinda shut down this thread because i was getting butchered on here about doing everything wrong, posted it on the turbo forums and they loved the build. so i just stayed over there
anyway its up an running, broke a fuel pump and had to re do that, still adjusting clearances on the downpipe, and im taking it to the dyno in the next couple of weeks

Man, what a good idea. I never thought about carbed blow-through builds, and that would be the perfect way to correct fuel in boost. Did you use oversized jets?
