need an affordable timing retard system

I need one for my 383 setup. I am spraying my car right now with a 150 shot and im high compression. What i want is something to retard my timing once spray is hit. I know some of the msd boxes can do it, however they are fairly expensive.

any other ideas?

Re: need an affordable timing retard system

Some of the 1980's GM HEI modules (5 pin) had a timing retard mechanism built into them for the ECM to active. I forget what the retard degrees was but it might work for you. A search on google would bring up more info.

I am currently running a Mallory 685 box, works great. They run about 250 at summit. Can pull out up to 15* and has a window switch for the bottle. My last trip to the dyno, with the timing set at 34*, and then pulled 8* i only lost 10hp 5flbs.

Check out the 5 pin information. I have 5 pin module from a 1981 chevy Blazer. Search the junkyards for 1980 - 1985 chevy truck distributors. They had the cheesy computers that used the 5-pin type module. The connector has two black wires, one white wire, one green wire.

The first 305ci unit seems like a decent price.
The second one isn't that cheap.
I would check the junkyard. Maybe a complete dizzy is cheaper.

Re: need an affordable timing retard system

I ran into this problem when I started spraying. I sold my 6al box and bought a MSD Digital 6 box. Has a two step rev limiter and timing retard. I just wired the retard wire to my activation switch. So when the system is armed the timing is already pulled.
