New to this and need some advice!!!
So I recently converted from 4th gen to my 84 z28 h.o...but now that I have the car Im looking to put some power behind it! I have a budget of about 1000 to 1500, I want to know how to get enough hp to have fun and also run a little. So the question is what can I do to get MORE hp within my budget? THANKS....O AND I LOVE THIS 3RD GEN MORE THAN ANY OF MY 4TH GENS!!!

you'll probably get the most bang out of N2O for 1/2-1/3 of that budget, and then use the rest for _a lot_ of bottle refills.
Or you can mod more stuff for the extra $$$
Stick or auto?
converter and shiftkit first for an auto, gears are good for either, exhaust, headers, cam... (in that order)

Well for 1500 you can do
If you have a 305(Swap it out and put a 350 in it you can find a 355 for around 600)
Then find a used NOS kit(250)
Then do used header/y pipe (200)
Good Cam/Lifter Set (150)
Stahl if auto aftermarket clutch if stick
Posi and gears

Re: New to this and need some advice!!!
thanks for the info, but should I swap the engine out or is the 305 H.O good enough? It only has 78,000 on the car and motor so if I were to get spray.....what all would need to be done? my main goal is around 300 or 350 hp, is that realistic or am I REACHING since I have a budget?

If you put NOS, you must also beef up the frame and suspension. Adding much more HP will cause things to twist and stress such as your axle, and rear suspension. If you dont spend money just on doing some reinforcements, you'll probably be spending more when something breaks.

lol sounds good but what all do I need to do for the frame, I have plans to do the suspension so I could be ok in that area! you think the motor will be fine with spray? wet or dry? and its a pretty stock motor with a mild cam, stock carb (I think)...

Re: New to this and need some advice!!!
Well the best place for questions and answers would be at the DYNO shop. When I was in the ARMY in Ft. Carson CO., I called a speed shop about a Paxton Super Charger and they told me that I would have to reinforce the chassis just because of the torque. There will be a heck of foot lbs at the rear wheels. There will also be some body twisting because of the engines torque as well. Have you seen how a muscle car jumps and twists when they jump of the line as soon as the christmas tree lights up? Thats what you want to prevent, the twist of the whole frame. So call a speed shop and ask them for advice. I never investigated further just because I dont plan on adding any type of boost. It's far more risky on throwing away a lot of money when your engine siezes because the piston rings literally melt in the cylinder not to mention the many blown head gaskets.

Re: New to this and need some advice!!!
Well Im not too informed about what will give you a lot of horses. Aluminum heads shave off around 50 lbs from the front end and you'll get better air flow. The cheapest that I found and decent are the Patriot Performance heads. I got a LT1 cam from a 94 Z-28 Camaro which is very similar to the 87 IROC roller cam (bigger lift which equals more air intake). Also some headers would benifit great results. But you would also have to upgrade your down pipes too. If your financially stable, I would also remove the 2 1/2 exaust system and install a 3" system. Most 3rd gens have a 2 1/2" Flowmaster muffler 80 series, but you can buy a $80-$100 3" Flowmaster 80 series muffler. one thing that not many people do about shedding wieght is most often over looked. You can buy a aftermarket steering box that is not powered. Inother words this gear box just has the input shaft and the box. Then you would remove the power steering pump which would shed about 10 pounds and you'de free up a pulley belt which would be less resistance on the crankshaft. Also getting a roller valve train (roller lifter, roller rockers). Also getting a high gear ratio on in the axle will get you a bigger and harder jump when you jump off the line. As for carb, I have no knowledge. I know more about the TPI which I have.

Re: New to this and need some advice!!!
thanks for all the info man ill def look into the mods and I might stay away from spray, and just go bolt on's etc. Im not really looking to run 9's or 10's but I just want to beat up on these ricers around here...and there are tons of them! This thing has a lot of power to be almost stock and just runs good so I really think this is one of my favorite cars I have owned, she just needs paint and some love under the hood and im good lol. o and did a lot of the Z28's come with power seats windows etc... and all leather interior? like I said I have had 3 4th gens and no 3rd gens until now!

Re: New to this and need some advice!!!
There are different models. I got a 86 IROC and its all non powered. The Interior is all plastic and cloth. But I have seen 86 IROCs with all power accesories. I had never in real life seen a Third gen with the rear hatch glass wiper, but they are out there. So there is a couple different "packages" out there.
