I have a 87 camaro 3.4 with a T5 right now and want to do a very low budget v8 & trans swap. I have access to a 327 with a stock forged bottom end and flat top pistons. Also possibly a M21 4 speed. (both for free) I plan on putting vortec heads on the 327 and either using the M21 or putting in a T56. After all that, I plan on putting a blow through carb setup on it. I'm shooting for 500hp. Is the bottom end on the 327 and the M21 strong enough for 500hp?

small journal or big journal crank?
500bhp and proper tune is no problem.

Small journal. I just want a streetable setup with moderate power. Would the stock camaro rear take 500hp?Originally Posted by junkcltr

I figure I will build everything else to take the power and then install the supercharger when I find one at a good price. Where can I find a good blow through carb at a decent price? Looking to spend no more than $500 or so but I want something that will be easy to setup and will work good.
Make one. Look up "hanger 18 blow through" and it should get you on the right track. You'll need a Holley DP to use it but that should get you started. I'd recommend The Turbo Forum's blow through section as well tbh. Lots of geniuses getting it done with blow throughs there.

I agree. For 500bhp I would just make one for under a 100 bucks.
I think I will just build one. Thanks for the advice.
What cam should I use for this setup?

Would 6" rods be ok to go with for this build? I plan on using forged pistons at about 8.5-9.0cr

Sure, but for a 500 bhp it is a waste of money. With a 327ci and a 9:1 pistons you shouldn't have to rev it high at all with under 12PSI of boost to get 500 bhp.
Suppose you build it to make 325 bhp and then add 8-10 PSI of boost you are at 500 BHP. To get 325 HP at 5000 RPM all you need is a 218* cam, intake, and stock heads. Nothing exotic necessary for 500 bhp.

Like most blown builds... that 500 will soon become 600 or 700
Nice to have some room for growth, but 500 at motor isnt too much for a blown 327

Could also sell that 327ci and buy a used 5.3 liter that stock puts out around 300 HP, add 10-12 PSI and have 500HP with room to grow in terms of strength. All for under $500 or probably the cost of the 6" rods he is looking at.
