Out with the NOS Kit.....In with the Turbo
After reading numerous threads on this forum regarding turbo third gens, my intentions are to change direction with my current setup and go with a turbo setup (especially since BBS is going to start building kits again).
I have a few questions that I'm hoping all of you can help me out with. I don't want to purchase the wrong part and then later kick myself in the **** for doing so.
Here are some general details of my GM crate motor. This motor is absolutely nothing special. I bought this motor years ago because it was the cheapest alternative at the time.
Block Type: Cast iron with 4-bolt main caps
Bore x stroke (in): 4.00 x 3.48
Camshaft duration (@.050 in): 222 degree intake / 222 degree exhaust
Camshaft lift (in): .450 intake / .460 exhaust
Camshaft type: Hydraulic flat tappet
Compression ratio: 8.5:1
Connecting rods Type: Powdered metal steel
Cylinder head Type: Iron; 76 cc chambers
350cu/290 HP:
Pistons Type: Hyperutectic
Valve size (in): 1.94 intake / 1.50 exhaust
Fuel system: 255 Walbro, 75 lb injectors
Accel DFI (not sure which version)
Transmission: 700R4 built with all the goodies....2800 stall
Rear end: Stock 9 bolt 3.27 gears
ASM Larger Tube Runners, Ported intake, 52MM TB
3 Stage NOS Kit spraying XXX (lots
You guys probably wouldn't believe me) being removed and replaced with single turbo system.
The goal is to keep the car street driveable but yet go 9's ultimately. Just reading and seeing some of your cars makes this seem like a piece of cake
Any recommendations on the turbo? Brand and size?
Any recommendations on the intercooler?
Cam change is a must. Any specific cam or what I should be looking to get?
Based on the above information, is there anything else that you would change or add to achieve the goal?

You can't leave us hanging, what shot of nitrous were you using?
And forged piston like scamaro said at the least as far as the block goes,
do a search for different builds, are you doing the work your self?

To make it reliable and streetable enough, i'd change the heads and internals to forged goodies to make sure it can handle the power of 9's. You can get there, its not too difficult if you have decent heads and good cam/intake on the motor. TPI is gonna make it abit harder since its restricting rpm range but enough boost can make up for it. A single 76mm can get you there. T4 .96 or larger A/R.
The S400 turbos are popular but are mostly T6 frame and thats harder to package, especially with BBS' design but he may beable to do something different and get that turbo to fit.

Re: Out with the NOS Kit.....In with the Turbo
As far as forged parts go, I didn't have any intentions on rebuilding the bottom end until she blows. Youv'e all heard the saying...if it ain't broke, don't fix it
The future plans do entail a strong bottom end with a flowing set of heads, etc. As far as the combo for a nitrous setup being odd, when I was originally planning my mods, the idea was to get a supercharger and hit it with a small shot of NoS to cool the charge. One of the guys from the shop had an IROC that had a 400 with a Vortec supercharger and a small kit doing high 9's. This was back in the day before procharger came out. I was basically mimicking his setup and getting the fuel system, DFI and NoS kit out of the way.
As far as intercoolers go, are there any brands I should stay away from or lean towards?
Any recommendations on the cam?

I don't know, it's not that much spray for hypereutectic pistons, I ran more through a stock LT1 for a while, but I hit it with a progressive shot so it wouldn't hit hard all at once. Broke plenty of driveline parts but the engine was fine...
