Rear Mount T88 on a 434?
Rear Mount T88 on a 434?
Let me just start by saying i probably haven't been on this site in 5-6 years lol but its good to be visiting again. So basically I've been building my 84 Camaro since 2002 a year after i got out of high school and it started out as a budget project but became kind of a on and off project. It originally was a 355 GMPP motor and just a semi built rear with 3.73 with a Turbo350. Then the summer of 02 i was sitting in traffic and it stalled out and wouldn't restart. It turned out the wing nut off the carb got loose and somehow the bolt snapped and fell down into one of the cylinders it was just horrible luck. So at the time i was pretty much broke so when I walked into our local engine shop my brother had to pull a bunch of strings for me and they let me kind of have a payment plan. I didn't want anything crazy it was suppose to be your run of the mill 383 and i wanted to save up and throw a supercharger on it. Anyway the engine guy talked me into a fully built 434 at a discounted cost thanks to my brother. So here we are 9 years later and it sat on the back burner for a while and now i have a 05 GTO that's about to get a turbo kit it self lol. We recently went back to work on the Camaro sanding it down and removing anything and everything from the body we could and we are aiming for under 3k weight wise. We got the K member in after we finished the engine bay and we were about to throw the motor in after that was sitting for 4 years. We decided we should take it back to the engine shop to get a quick peek and make sure there was no issues from sitting so long. The results came back fine except for a little rust in the cylinders which he offered to clean up for us. Now the motor was suppose to be a race motor which ment race gas but after he took a look at it and we were telling him it be nice not to have to pay for that stuff after the price increases these past few years he said we could change things up easily now. So the motors back in the shop getting new pistons and a cam. Now back to the topic sorry for the detailed back story lol. Today we went to a local shop that specializes in performance cars to check out a rear mount custom turbo setup for the GTO and we got to talking and he was asking about the camaro. Somehow we got on the topic of what kind of power the 434 would make if we changed up the Cam to a turbo one instead of spray and had a rear mount built for it with a T88 on it. So now i'm actually thinking about doing this. The original motor dyno'd in at 700hp on a engine dyno and we were planning on wacking it with a 300-400 shot. Now the cars built for this now its got a fully built ford 9" from spohn and a Turbo 400 with all the goodies and the suspension has been sitting in the garage for the last 2 years along with a big disc brake conversion. I've thought about selling the project a few times when it would sit for so long with nothing going on and then i'd just end up buying more parts for it lol. So now we've talk to the engine guy about the turbo cam and he needs us to get back to him before the end of the month which is when it was suppose to be finished from the improvements. So now its do i dump a couple more G's in it and get the custom rear mount built or do i just have them close it and stick with the all motor spray block. The new cam setup should produce ~650hp the guy at the shop is telling us the turbo setup would probably put it damn close to the 4 digit number and be pretty reliable. It would kind of be nice not to have to carry around 2-3 bottles for the track and have access to most the power. So thats where i'm at now just thought i'd see what people thought about setting up a rear mount on a 3rd gen.
Re: Rear Mount T88 on a 434?
If your going to go the turbo route i would put the turbo in the front. Front mount turbo work better and have way less problems than rear mounts.
N2o is cheaper ,simple, and will make great power . In either case you must
let your engine builder know which route you want to go. Projects take time ,in my case im at the 6 year mark and counting.

You have plenty of room up front to do a T88 single just need to fab new headers for it. Some places make turbo headers so it may not be a bad place to start. But whats the compression on that motor? 700hp on a 434 is a very stout motor and likely atleast 11 to 1 compression with a big cam to rev high enough to make 700hp. Cam swap alone likely wont make it a good turbo motor. Compression needs to be lower unless you do run E85 or racegas.
It sounds like a solid motor combo and would work great on a 300 hit. I'd keep the spray and just turbo the goat.

11.5 is doable on pump gas 93 oct with the right tune/plugs/etc. It likely has a big cam so its got lower dynamic compression so it SHOULD be streetable on pump gas. Just back off the timing alittle. I'd keep it nitrous assisted since its already together and proven to be strong all motor as it is.
