7 second Camaro build
Figured i'd start a thread in the power adder section on my twin turbo camaro. The car is currently running and driving, but im always upgrading and changing things in the quest to go faster...
The car is a 86' Z28, built by myself. It has a 400ci sbc, with twin Borg Warner Billet S467's, Chiseled Performance air to air intercooler, controlled by Holley HP EFI. Transmission Specialties Proline 3000 powerglide, Custom PTC convertor, Moser 9" rear end with 3.25 gears.
On pump gas/meth and 16 psi boost the car has made 950RWHP, and on C16 and 22psi it made 1213 RWHP.
So far the car has been 8.35 at 170 mph on a 275 drag radial to the 1/4 mile, and has been 5.44 at 132 mph to the 1/8th mile, with a 1.32 60'.

Re: Chronicles of 7 sec camaro...
On the 8.35 pass the car made approx 24 psi boost and was on 22 degrees on timing, The turbos show no signs of being out of air yet, and the timing is still very soft for a SBC with the octane of fuel I am running.
The goal is now to put the car into the 7's before the end of the summer, while I could simply just turn up the power, I am always wanting to make the car work better and be lighter. Currently with the radials and a parachute it weighs in at 3650 lbs with me in it.
My next upgrade is the spindles and front brakes, the car currently has a set of factory 1LE front brakes, they are extremely heavy so they gotta go. I have already received the Racecraft 2" drop spindles, which is around a 8lb weight savings. And I have also ordered a set of lightweight wilwood front brakes that are supposed to be around a 50lb weight savings over the stock thirdgen brakes (never mind the heavier 1LE's). They should be here by the end of the week, and should be installed this weekend. Hoping that another 60 or so lb's of the nose, (unsprung aswell...) will make the car leave a bit better (hopefully now into the 1.2x 60 foot range, and I can bring the power in a bit quicker and pour some more power to it up top!
Another issue that needs to be addressed before I can try for 7's, is the fact that the fuel pump is not adequate. Currently the car has a aeromotive Eliminator with a -10 feed line and a -8 return line. under big boost up top, according to the datalogs, the car starts to drop in fuel pressure. To cure this I am going to add a second fuel pump controlled by my holley ECU to turn on at 6psi boost. The second fuel pump is simply an aeromotive A1000 a friend is letting me use till the end of the year.

Re: Chronicles of a 7 second camaro.
Look up the holley dominator fuel pump thats actually 2 pumps into one casing. I think it delivers 200 gph and good to 1800 hp. Your holley can control it well for street and strip. Idk you may need more figuring 1400 whp? Getting close to 1600-1700 flywheel?

Re: Chronicles of a 7 second camaro.
I think it's gonna be in that 1600hp flywheel range, I dont wanna buy another pump this year, as I plan on putting a cable drive mechanical in it this winter, so this is just a cheap, and temporary solution.

Surely you and Orr have the fastest 3rd gens on this site hands down!! The best part is that the two of you are doing it with the correct era gen 1 technology and did not jump on the LSX bandwagon. Don't get me wrong it's so tempting to just swap to the latest and greatest from GM, but it's always nice to see someone that knows a lot about how an engine works and what is needed to make it perform, no matter what platform being used. The car is a monster and well built, a true testament of your knowledge and craftsmanship.

re: 7 second Camaro build
All the required components for the brake conversion showed up today. I will likely start on the install friday night.
Racecraft spindles
Wilwood front brakes
Billet aluminum front lug nuts and required strut spacers from racecraft
ALSO, picked up a brand new pair of AFCO big gun rear coil overs that I will install this winter to attempt to shave some more time off the 60 foot. the car currently has Strange Double adjustable shocks and stock rear springs.

AWESOME job man.
If you check my thread you'll see my findings on the holley pumps. Supposedly they only recommend the 12-1800 for cars that aren't on the street a lot and aren't ran continuously for extended times. I am replacing mine with a 1600, since that should support my goals. The 12-1800 is good with E85, race gas, methanol, etc.

I need a pump that wont heat my fuel yet will still support my power goals, hence the reason I want to change to a rear mounted cable driven mechanical. I street drive me car A LOT and have had fuel boiling issues on only one occasion.

Nice fab work. Looks like countless hours into sanding and buffing. One of the nicest third gens I have seen. How big is the aftercooler out pipe? 3.5 or 4"?

I've really enjoyed watching your car come together, you're a talented individual.
I do have a question about the racecraft 2"drop spindles, do you know if they are good for autocross / street? I know you're driving it on the streets, but you're running skinnies up front & I'm looking at 19x10" rims & 285/35/19's.... kinda uncertain that the weight savings are not as important as safety, ( as far as throwing the weight of the car X inertia @ 100+ mph).
Thanks in advance for any input &/or advice. ..Rick

Surprisingly the paint is single stage and only had a quick buff done, no wet sanding. The guy that painted the car is very talented. The pipe from the intercooler to the TB is 4"

Re: 7 second Camaro build
Picked up another couple pairs of Radial pro's, been through 2 sets of these this summer already, along with 2-3 pairs of slicks. Hoping these will last me till the end of the year lol. Amazing how many tires you can go through when you actually drive your car.
Also got the brakes and spindles assembled and ready to install.
First time ever doing safety wire, not as hard as it looks.
I will be bolting them on the car tonight and will be installing the second fuel pump tomorrow night in preparation for street legal drags this friday, and a double header X275 race at out local track this weekend.

Brakes and spindles should be near 60lbs of unsprung weight loss. Lots of guys locally running these brakes without issue (or similar strange, aerospace etc...)

Doubt it, Personally it doesn't bother me one bit, the car makes good power even out of boost so its very driveable, and for small tire racing I like the lower first gear of the powerglide.

Re: 7 second Camaro build
Well, It was a interesting weekend to say the least, Worked until 5am Friday night to get the new brakes and spindles installed. Rand into a bunch of small issues, old bump steer sleeves weren’t long enough, so I had a friend at a local machine shop whip up some custom ones for me.
Drove the car to the race track Saturday AM, with the intentions of running the local x275 class. First round qualifier I put a known tuneup in the car (same one I went 5.44 on) and knew that since that prep was killer and it had brand new tires on it, that the car should hook without issues. And it did exactly that… Left the starting line with the front tires approx. 1 foot in the air, and then the power started coming in and it went on the bumper. Went 1.31 to the 60’ on the back tire. Rode it out way past the 330’ mark and it wasn’t coming down. I pedaled it slightly (went from 100% TPS to 82% tps) and the car came crashing down hard. Pushed the steering rack up hard, broke the rack mounts and cracked the transmission pan. Other then that, there does not seem to be much other damage.
Somehow, no one got any photos or videos on it on the bumper, which is disappointing, but I did get this wicked shot of it, just before the power came in. lol

Re: 7 second Camaro build
Engine is out and a bunch of winter upgrades are happening.
Some of these include:
- Bigger 66mm wastegates
- Dart little M block
- New crank, rods and pistons
- Motor plates
- relcoating a bunch of things and cleaning up the engine bay
- Powdercoating and cleaning up some of the charge piping
- Holley touchscreen to replace all the gauges
- Magnafuel Pro outlaw 1000 mechanical fuel pump with waterman cable at the back of the car
- 35 spline axles and new MW spool
- Narrowing rear end 1" per side and switching to big ford housing ends
- Aerospace rear brakes
- Double beadlock champion 15x10 wheels
- New K-member with the rack moved up and forward ( Old k-member is bent from the wheelie)
- Wheelie skis
- Belly pan
- Add another scavenge stage to dry sump
- A bunch of weight reduction (goal is 3400-3450lb race weight)
- Possibly a cage upgrade to a 25.5 7.50 cert
- Holley dominator ECU to log a bunch of additional things in the car each pass ( DS speed, trans line PSi, convertor charge PSI, water PSI, trans temp, back pressure psi, oil temp)
- 1 piece fiberglass front bumper that is fastened with DZUS fasteners for quick install/removal ( makes loading on a trailer easier or fixing intercooler couplers that blow off etc...
Pulled the engine apart...
Bent all 8 Callies Compstar I beam rods. Cant say I am surprised. I pushed these way past the advertised power rating.
Bought a set of callies Ultra H beam rods to replace them
New dominator ECU...
Used set of Precision turbo 66mm wastegates from local Pro mod racer Jim Bell
New magnafuel Pro outlaw 100 mechanical pump.

Front motor plate and mid plate arrived, got a plastic dummy block and hope to get them mocked into the car once I am finished with the fire wall.
Removed everything from the firewall, along with the old filler panels. Going to weld up any remaining holes in the firewall, then bodywork it smooth. First though, I need to strip all the dynamat from the inside of the fire wall. All the remaining sound deadener inside the car is getting removed in an attempt to get some more weight out of the car.
Gutted all the old wiring from under the dash, once the firewall is done, I will mount the new ECU, Leash Electronics relay board, Boost controller and billet Map sensor for boost controller. Then I will start to re-wire the car. Hoping to have this done and have the car ready for the engine again for the end of January.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the kind words and encouragement. Since I won COTM this year, I am now entered for Car of the Year aswell! Make sure everyone goes and casts their vote for their favorite car!
