Ignition upgrades for Forced Induction

Hi and let me start right off the bat by saying thanks for any replies. I may not have a lot of posts but I have been lurking on the forums for years now and the wealth of knowledge is invaluable.

I supercharged my mostly stock L98 last year and as with any major project there are things that need to be cleaned up, ironed out, and improved upon.

Specs: Engine: L98 (Stock cam, heads, 1.6 RRs, SLP runners, SLP Tri Ys)
Fuel: Walbro 255, Bosch 30# injectors, FMU, custom PROM to run it

My ignition system is pretty much stock, dist, coil, ignition module all stock. I have new plugs NGK UR6s (gapped at 035), Some Taylor spiral core wires and a MSD cap and rotor.

The car will hold idle without any help but it surges every once in awhile, also I have what I believe is a lean miss at low RPM cruise ( sort of a slight jerking ) Goes away as soon as I get into the throttle.

For my question:

Do you think going to an aftermarket ignition box I will see any benefits? Is there any boxes recommended that are pretty much plug and play along with being reliable?
I don't want to hack up any harnesses if I can help it.

Box may help in boost but i dont think it does anything at idle and part throttle. Car might just need better tuning.

.035” gap should be fine for part throttle but may be wide for boost depending how much. Can try it but it may want to be much tighter.

a better hotter coil would be nice.

I could be off but my thinking was that a lean mixture burns slower and is more difficult to light-off which is why you get a lean miss. Wouldn't a more powerful spark help with this? My coil is factory with 120,000 miles it could be due for an upgrade.

Re: Ignition upgrades for Forced Induction

It does. But the factory system is pretty strong as is with a good coil and wire. Usually super lean mixes tend to use wider plug gaps and hotter spark with alot more advance to get it to burn. I just havent experienced it but i guess it depends on how lean you are trying to run. Stoich should generally be target and be ok with that ignition system.

if you do plan on going to more boost or more engine mods that would make more power and benefit from a box, then by all means go for it. Get one with a timing retard function vs boost to make tuning easier
