What is needed for Supercharger
What is needed for Supercharger
Hello All,
I have asked a similar question and received way to many different answers. What do I need to do to add a supercharger to my 1992 5.7 Formula? I just want the car to be competitive and have some get up and go. Its a 60,000 mile car with Headers, 3" exhaust, Platinum plugs performance wires. Basically a stock car. What are the costs involved and what kind of HP should I expect. I am not looking to spend 15K or make the car run with new super cars. Just want to make it be able to at least put on a. good show and feel faster than my Ford F350. Any input is welcome and appreciated. Again not looking to spend 10-15K Also open to other mod suggestions, Head cam combo, ignition, intake? Thank you in advance folks

... then get your supercharger or turbo setup when you're ready.

If you are looking for a real hot rods, you'll want to do cam, heads, intake, management system.
I've been using Holley for a little bit now, and have used megasquirt too. Both are Fantastic, Holley is a bit more user friendly. Megasquirt has been stagnant as far as development of new features goes for about 8 years now, which is a lifetime when it comes to technology.

Even the Procharger kit is not a kit. It's a collection of parts that you will have to manipulate to make fit. There is soooo much you need to do to do it properly which I've documented here somewhere. It is way more involved than most people think.

The vortech kit takes a little longer to install because of the oil drain. for a completely stock l98 however they are complete kits.

Does vortech even make a kit anymore? I didnt see any on their website and they own paxton now? They didnt have one either
procharger has the p1sc and d1 blowers still. A p1 is enough to wake that car up some. 9 psi or so will make what they claim, 13-20 mph trap speed increase. My 305 although turbocharged at 8 psi picked up probably 20 mph since I expected it to run 90 mph traps or slower stock and it went 110-111. And that was with issues
you’ll wanna make sure your ignition components are good. Good cap and rotor, fresh wires and get ngk plugs one step colder 5-6 heat range gapped tight at .028 or so. Ideally you’ll burn a chip to control timing or add ignition box timing retard to pull 6-10 deg at 9 psi. Might even pull more you’ll have to see. It will live when tuned right. Thats the biggest thing. The fmu stuff can work but need a good high pressure pump like a walbro 340. 255 might work but might as well make sure you got the volume since high pressure on those pumps lose flow quickly

I bought the P1SC kit about 10 years ago and ran that on the '88 Formula for a bit. That car had a single plane so I fabbed the ducting to a FMIC, but otherwise the kit was "complete". It came with an FMU but no ignition retard (was intended to be used with FMIC, and manual said it wasn't needed). Was direct bolt in, but the brackets flex and chewed up a few belts until I spaced it just right.
I'm probably going to do a twin turbo on the rat rod. I need to build another garage here though, I'm out of space.
