Cams etc....how well do they work?
I have been told that a good combo of mods to get on my 305 would be a bigger cam, roller rockers/lifters, and with that, a chip, fuel pressure regulator, and airfoil would work nicely. Do the roller rockers and roller lifters add a lot more power because of no friction? And what about the cam- will I be getting a significant loss of gas mileage after installing it? How much power (in total with everything installed and tuned to spec) would i get from putting all of that stuff in? My engine probably has about 150k miles on it (not sure though...odometer was rolled back), and still runs perfectly (except for valve guide seals making it smoke on startup)....any danger because of the miles? I am doing all of this work around the summer some time when I get the money, but I'm planning ahead. My goal is about 300 horsepower...will this get me there? If not, what other little things can help? (I may have about $1000 to play with by the summer) Sorry that this post isnt about turbos or anything, but I couldnt find another board that was appropriate for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and testimonials from people who have similar streetable setups would help me greatly (similar 300 horse powerplants). I'm looking for 14s somewhere...low, if possible. All information about my current setup is in my signature- stock 305tpi, 2.73 rear, k+n filters on order, 150k miles, runs strong all the way up to redline each time, no problems. One thing I notice though- how come it is that like, around 4000 rpms the engine seems to lose a bit of punch? I mean, it still pulls, but is it because I hear that TPI engines arent good at breathing at that rpm? Can the higher flow filters and an airfoil solve this problem? Any help is appreciated. Thanks
