Turbo 305 Planning

Howdy everybody,

I have unexpectedly acquired a turbo from a Cummins QSL9 (Holset HX40) for essentially less than what its worth in scrap metal. Its a like-new reman unit, and came with the wastegate.

From what I've been able to research, this beefy cast iron turbo should actually work great for what I want, which is a torquey 5200rpm maximum street motor running 5-8lbs of boost. I would be installing this on my 305 (L03) Formula.

I'm thinking of installing where the AIR pump system is supposed to be mounted. Might be pretty tight with this size, otherwise I may swap the battery over to the drivers side and put it there.

I thought it would be cool to do a hood scoop mounted intercooler, similar to the WRX's but reversed.

I'm not worried about the swirlports, I don't plan to heavily race this car and I figure whatever flow losses on the higher end will be made up for with boost (at least help keep the high end torque a little flatter).

What I really need to consider is what to upgrade the TBI unit to. I've been looking at the Sniper and others like Aces, and I may have to get one anyway to run my cam n/a until I get everything I need for the turbo.. unfortunately Brian Harris doesn't ship to Canada and no one up here touches PROMs.

Lets say my budget for fuel injection is about 2K USD, less would be great but I want it to work great too.

What are your recommendations on EFI that also supports boost? Would be sweet to keep running the car on 87 if possible but that may be a pipe dream.

Cheers, let me know what you all think.

O

Re: Turbo 305 Planning

A couple of years ago, I would have said EBL Flash, but that's not practical anymore so you're back to Aces, Fitech, Holley Sniper, etc. Of all of them the Holley has the most support and probably the least aggravation and yep, the most expensive. It hurts on the exchange for guys like us in Canada but...

If you are not running a lot of boost, as in under 10lbs, skip the intercooler. Less plumbing, less money and don't worry you'll spend lots of money elsewhere at least at the start.
