turbo near the muffler?

hey guys,
how close does the turbo need to be to the engine, is the closer the better, or if I do a set up can I move it over by the y-pipe or maybe put it where the cat is now. I would love to have a turbo car that you can't see the turbo on. whats the secret

serious ground clearance issues and probably some increased turbo lag from being farther away from the engine. A turbo's intake and exhaust are perpendicular to each other. Intake routing and oil/cooling lines etc. would be interesting as well.

Might work with some increasing of the hump already there though.

what about putting it under the engine towards the back. actually twins right by the fire wall, I just don't want it to sit on top of the engine.

Turbo's are dependant on exhaust energy (heat), and the further you move them away fromt he exhaust valve, the less efficient and effective they are. It's always a good idea to keep pre-turbo plumbing to a practical minimum.

The biggest problem with mounting a turbo low is the oil return. It must be a thick free flowing downslope back into the oil pan above oil level. It is very important that the oil drains easily from the turbo.

It is possible to drain the oil to some type of extra oil tank below the turbo. Then a dry sump oil pump can pump the oil back into the engine oil pan ...

The Callaway Sledgehammer Corvette used a system like that.

I just thought it was funny because I was reading 89JYturbo's remote mount turbo thread and then I found this where nobody really tried it yet at the time....

It still isn't because most engine bays have enough room for turbo(s). The energy calcs show where it should be for optimal performance. A lot of people just want good enough.......and in comes the RMT setup. Although, it would be interesting to try a RMT with thick wall SS pipe.
