Stop related threads from opening?

Stop related threads from opening?
I'm having a hard time scrolling through threads I am interested in because there is another thread open that I don't care about below it on the same page. When there are pictures loading up it is even more of a pita, and scrolling through the screen jumps all over the place and makes things very frustrating.
What do I have to do to stop if from opening this other topic I don't care about? If you can give me an answer, thanks in advance!

JT, Can this option be disabled by default, rather than enabled? This is becoming a major issue to new members since it's been an option and is causing people to respond to a post just to find out that their response went into the related topic rather than the original post.
