Which is better: dog poop, or horse poop?
The 187s are 305 swirlies, and the 193s are 350 swirlies. I can't imagine either being "better" than the other for anything, although one probably would be worse than the other, in any given application. They even weigh about the same, so their effectiveness in anchoring a boat would be about equal, and you'll get about the same for them at the scrap yard (which is what you need to do with both sets).

Although it may appear dim, new light has been shed on siwrl port heads. When ported they can produce decent flow numbers for low RPM motors. In stock from the 187's outflow the 416/081's on the exhaust side but do not on the intake side. The jury is still out on which side is better to err on. A few people have flowbenched these heads in ported and non ported stages and disscussions of each are covered in some of these following threads. The decision is up to you weather or not you want to use them. You will never get the same performance out of a a swirl port head as compaired to a properly ported set of 416 or 081 heads. However, when untouched those heads (416's and 081's) are only margonaly better. Tuning and cam selection are keys to making power with these heads. Dewey is running 14.5's with his untouched stock 187 heads. You need to choose a cam that works well with the low RPM flow advantages of these heads. Read the following and judge for your self. More and more track data is starting to come up which is changing all previous attitudes on swirl port heads. I was a huge skeptic until I started seeing this data and looking at peoples track times with proper chip tuning. I have not made a formal decision on which heads I would choose for a TBI application. I honestly have been shocked by the results some people are seeing and it is hard to ingnore their recorded flow/track time results. If you have no money at all and cannot fully take advantage of a 416/081 head, then the swirl ports can be used. You limit the future potential with swirl port heads when compaired to other GM castings. However, if you have a low RPM motor it may be a viable consideration.

time to bump the crap outta this post
i have a 67 283sbc currently has the 3884520 heads on it, i may have access to a set of 14102187 heads, will they be a good combination
running 94 TBI components on it, i need the heads for the accessory holes on it
running 7427 pcm, no tuning done to it, cam is "stock" or enough for the computer to run fine, edelbrock 2703 intake, standard tbi unit, and the caprice intake
may as well add true duals, currently no cats
this is all in a 94 s10 pickup

one of the few engines i used to build back in the 60's was the 283. you could bore it out to 301 and stroke it to 317 and have a high reving mover.
but the swirl port heads are not for you.
they give great torque up to 4500 rpm but die after that. you are going to be running in the 6000+ range with a 283. so a good cam will never get to be used because when it starts to pull the heads will not let it.
but if you are going to stay under 4500 they can put out tons of torque.
do a search for 187 swirl and you will hit the mother load of what you can do with them and what you cant.

what heads SHOULD i use that have the accessory holes in them, im not looking to make a power house out of the truck (but it is way faster than the 2.2 , and faster still than the 4.3)

'94 TBI is truck only, and the rpm limiter was still in the distributor. Switch to an LO3 camaro distributor if you want more than 5250 rpm.

That, IDK, but it's probably fuel rather than spark. Maybe you already have a camaro distributor swapped in by a previous owner?

i dont know if it was fuel or spark, id was kinda like a ric3r (wth no rice(r) no this forums) reving, just not as quick bounce back, i need to correct my tach for the v8 to give you an accurate number, but revs out at the stopper (6k) or maybe a little past the stopper, so it is really 4-4.5k redline in p/n
