my 3.4 build

I am currently in the middle of a 3.4 build up for my 89 as some of you know. So far I have many parts but no motor. Here is what I have got so far:
ported heads w/ 1.6 RRs

comp 260H cam

actually found some LTs that cam in the mail today. They are made my hedman and are no longer made so they are pretty hard to come by.

The only other modification that I am going to do is go with 3.4 DOHC pistons to bump up the compression to 9.95:1 and hoping that the valves clear which they should. All in all I am hoping to make around 200 NA HP out of this little project that has grown into more than I was planning on. I just happen to find these parts for cheap so I said why not?

just about every car there has one
an it looks like your going to put those headers to good use , i know i couldnt

Re: my 3.4 build

I don't have one but I know where I am getting one. I am getting one from a guy who is relatively close to me who is giving me his old one for free but it doesn't have pistons.

I have a flexplate if you need one.

Think I have gotten rid of the rest of my v6 parts.

Re: my 3.4 build

New pistons are available from GMpartsdirect. Not sure how much the DOHC pistons are, but $300 for brand-new 3400 pistons.

Re: my 3.4 build

Are you using the stock intake manifold? It'll be hard to reach your power goal unless you can make it under ~5500 rpm, which is where the stock manifold falls flat on it's face. My numbers show you'll have plenty of torque with a nice flat curve though.

Re: my 3.4 build

I know that this motor will make lots of torque for what it is and that the intakes are the huge restriction in the motor besides the heads. I am going to gasket match and port the manifolds as much as I can with a dremel.

Re: my 3.4 build

Got some pistons in the mail. These are for the 91-95 DOHC motors and will bump my compression to 9.95:1 and will clear the valves.

And since I can't edit the first post for some reason here are the pics again for the motor.

Oh and the most important part of the engine, the block:

The block need to be hot tanked to clean off the rust. I'll get new cam bearings and freeze plugs installed at whatever shop I take it to. I still need many small parts and a good crank and rods which I should be able to pick up in a couple of weeks. I need to finish the port work on the intakes also.

Re: my 3.4 build

While you've got it torn apart why not throw away the distributor and go DIS? What's your plan for tuning?

Re: my 3.4 build

I don't want to mess with any wiring really. What's wrong with a dizzy? I'm not to aluminum heads so why throw it out? I know that it is probably better but this is mostly going to be a street car. I have been looking into tuning a little bit. I know that with OBD1 I'll have to datalog and burn chips. I'm going to start to look more into it when its closer to the summer when I have a chance to drop in the motor when it gets built.

Re: my 3.4 build

The wiring's a lot simpler than you think. Go take a look at fast355's thread in the DFI and ECM section. You'll need to datalog nomatter what route you go, only difference between obd1 and aftermarket/obd2 ecm's is chip burning. And you don't need to do that if you get a moates ostrich.

Re: my 3.4 build

I have looked into it and teh ostrich. I think that I am just going to stay with the dizzy and burn a new chip for it. I am not going FWD topend so I won't go to DIS. If I ever go to the FWD topend then I would for sure.

Re: my 3.4 build

You don't need to burn a chip. Use one out of a FWD and wire the ICM in.

What do you mean. Burn a chip for a tune or for the DIS swap?

I mean go to the junk yard and grab a chip from an ECM on a FWD, along with the coil packs, then hook it up to your ECM.

I need to grab a manual for a FWD for the wiring diagrams to tell you the exact color of wires to hook up, but it is a direct swap for the most part.

I'll be testing it on mine soon.

Re: my 3.4 build

I am staying with the dizzy. Tuning by burning a chip for the motor since the stock tune is going to be pushed.

Well, then what's the difference between burning a chip if it's DIS or distributor? They both are just a timing table :P
