Did GM Performance Parts ever off the 1LE brakes as a "kit"
History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Did GM Performance Parts ever off the 1LE brakes as a "kit"
I don't have any performance parts catalogs from that long ago. Jut curious if GM ever offered a 1LE brake kit over the counter? I suspect they did ... just looking for more info.
Nope, never did it as a "kit". Stainless Steel Brake Company offers a bolt-on 1LE kit using mostly OEM components for about $995.00 but GM never offered it whole.
You could buy either front left or right side complete assemblies over the counter at any chevy dealer. Before they were discontiniued from G.M.You could also get them from the G.M. performance parts catalog.i think they were about $565 ea.side.
I found three old Performance Parts Catalogs, but no luck
- 1992 ... no brakes, but it did have all the SLP f-body parts. Runners, cold air kits, proms, etc.
- 1997 ... did have the Dana 44
- 1998 ... only had parts for the discontinued Dana44.
Looks like I need to find a 93 or 94 version of the performance parts book.

That's a new one on me. I don't remember any kits being available at all from GM, only the individual parts all of which are still available except for the prop-valve, saddle brackets, and spindles.
For the amount of money it would cost to cobble together a 1LE front setup it would just be easier to get a system from Baer. That's what I did for the rear on my RS, and eventually will do on the front too. Some will argue that if you look hard enough you can do it cheaper, but the Baer stuff is basically an even better setup so I went that route.
Agreed. You can most likely get better parts for the same or better pricing.
I am trying to put my car back to 100% stock as it has some collector value (in my opinion). It might cost me more, but in the end, it should make a better car ... historically speaking that is.
Any chance you would know the part number, or have a parts catalog?

I recall back in the early 90's that GM did list it in the performance parts catalog along with the newly announce ZZ1 engine! I can't find that parts book which I find odd since I keep all that stuff.
And to give more credit to this story ... years ago I bought a set of 1LE brakes complete from a GM "cut away" car. IT was used to showcase all the performance parts you could buy from GM. So the brakes were all detailed and painted. They were installed on a 1987 IROC.

Funny, I don't ever remember replying to this or receiving notifications.Anyway, these are the part #s i recall, 18018571 & 18018572.I don't remember which is RH, LH.I recall reading a car mag article & also from a Camaro book i have, somewhere.Only one of them listed the price.Hope this helps.
I'm sure some of you can do better research than me.

Mark.
Anyone figured out (or got a copy) which year they did list the 1LE parts in the GM Performance Parts Catalog ... been looking as well but not sure which year they where in there so any help much appreciated.

I at least now know, that I don't have to remove my lower control arms and replace them with 16" wheel specific ones. I'll just remove the (lower control arm bumpers part #14089443) off the used 16" control arms I got off on Ebay and install them on my originally installed lower control arms.

Not necessarily. Read the page again... It says -
The following components are required when converting a base Camaro or Firebird to the superior handling of the 1LE option.
The key word is "base". Most of the part numbers in that list are common equipment. If you're starting with a 1982 Sport Coupe or maybe a V6 than yeah, all that stuff is necessary. If you've got a 85-92 Z28 or WS6 Firebird, you've probably already got nearly everything in that list aside from the front brakes, rear control arm bushings, and shocks/struts. Everything else is the same as the stock hardware used in most 16" wheel equipped 91-92 cars. Some things like the CDB/NNL springs are typical FE2 hardware that date back to the early 80s.

The bump stops might matter, IDK - but the more important part is probably the 16" wheel stops to keep 245/50's from ripping out the fender liners.

I meant to say "lower control arm bumper" is what GM listed on the catalog so as not to rub the inner fender well.
Re: Did GM Performance Parts ever off the 1LE brakes as a "kit"
Google the part number, it's for the front bump stops. The part that controls how far the wheels can turn is the steel bracket that keeps the spindles from turning too far. Pretty sure it's riveted to the control arm.
