84 Z28, Childhood dream

Picture from the add.

Less than 5 hours apart. And after a quick wash to remove 5 years of grime.

Rockers behind the ground effects.

rear wheel wells

Original documentation

Hey guys and gals. I'm Rob and I'm happy to say that I've been able to finally take on a project. I sold my Jeep offroad toy, and have decided to finally find my dream car and start a long term project, with the support of my girlfriend of 9 years. (lucky me to find one who actually encouraged me to spend the money LOL).

Long story short, I rescued this from someone's driveway after it's been sitting for 5 years with no engine as it was picked out by the guys son to put into his pickup after the motor blew up in it.

It's an 84 z28, 305 automatic car. T-Tops, grey cloth interior. The guy I bought it from purchased it from the showroom and has owned it since. It has never seen a winter, salt and according to him very little rain. It has 131,000 Original KM on it (roughly 81 000 MI if my math is correct). It came with two sets of original keys, and the original literature from the dealership...Owners manual, manual supplement and the warranty book. To top it off, it also came with a z28 keychain from 84. I paid $1000 for it which I feel is a steal of a deal.

I dropped off the jeep to its new owner and less than 5 hours later I picked up the car and brought it home. Here are a few pictures to tide you over.

I've also picked up a 350 in need of a rebuild to start tinkering with over the next while.

I'm extremely excited to finally have my childhood dream car, and I cant wait to get it rolling.

Glad you saved the Z28 from an uncertain future. Sounds like you'll give her the TLC she deserves! Good to hear some history on the car & that you have some documentation as well (wish I did).

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

Thanks guys.

Unfortunately those are the only wheels that came with it. They're from a gmc sonoma or jimmy if I'm not mistaken. Kind of an odd thing, but it was far from a deal breaker lol. I'm not too sure where the original wheels for it went. He said he had a look around the property for them, but his son had probably swapped them out and are now probably long gone. I don't blame him, I had z28 wheels on my 87 jimmy s15 low rider way back. It would have been great to get them also.

Working on that. May take a little while for me to get to. The car is currently still on the trailer and I cant open the doors as they hit the fenders. I just bought a house and moving day is the 31st of this month, so when it's at the new abode, i'll be rolling it off the trailer and getting into a massive clean up. I will definitely post up some more pictures when that happens. I want to document the whole process.

Ya, Kind of struck me as odd as well. It wasn't too big a deal for me anyways, as I am a mechanic at a tire and all around auto repair shop here in town so I have access to replica wheel manufacturers. oddly enough, I don't mind the way the s19 wheels look on there for some reason. I know its not correct for the car so they will be changed before it comes out on the road.

I honestly don't know too much about the car. I'm completely new to the Camaro game, I guess I need to run the vin at the dealer to get the complete options list as a starting point to find out exactly what Ive got.

I have no idea what happened to the original wheels. I guess he must have sold them in the time it was sitting there...I asked if he still had them and he didn't seem to recall if he did or not. Lol (he was an older gentleman who I think had some memory issues). His wife didn't even know they weren't original wheels. Lol

Am I the only one not worried about the wheels? lol

Those wheels have to be the most common ones I see on craigslist and junkyards.

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

Wheels should be available if you go stock. May be fun to have a set on hand even if you go custom. I'd like to see the American Racing Torque Thrusts on a red '84 (selfish request so I can see if I should get a set. do it. do it).

There might still be the RPO sticker under the center console lid. That'll list your option codes. Send us a photo if you don't mind. Enough RPO code nerds on here to decipher it for you, myself included.

I have a 84 z28 HO and my cat looked different. Mine was more round, not square like you can see in the pic above.

Does have quiet sound group which is interesting.

Block heater but no AC perhaps a common combo for Canadian cars.

WOW. I just went through it all and figure out all...well most of those codes. there are a handful that weren't listed that I wouldn't mind figuring out somehow. Maybe i'll shoot into the dealer and get them to run it all.

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

It's extra insulation in a few locations behind panels, which may make it a bit quieter inside. But I have no basis for comparison.

I think the 1983 or 1984 Camaro GM Vehicle Information shows an image of where extra insulation was placed.

You'll also fine some RPO codes in there.

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

Your car was set up as a good day to day sporty passenger car. Good options for functional day to day living, and TTops to boot. All in great looking car what was a huge hit when new. People don't seem to respect that even the most stripped down early thirdgen Z28 was/is still a great looking and fun to drive car.

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

Well, I managed to find myself a motor last night. I was originally going to with a 350 carb'd, but have since changed my mind. I found a 5.3L Vortec LM7 from an 02 Avalanche. 190 KM on it, with harness and all sensors and ecu for $275. Too good to pass up.

It'll be a while before any progress gets made with the swap. Mostly researching (seems endless), and gathering parts. I also need to reach a decision on a transmission. The car currently has a 700R4, which I've read will bolt up with a spacer and couple other items...but as the old saying goes, when in rome....t56 maybe? Trouble is finding one up here, and when you do people seem to want a small fortune for them.

Anyways, here's a little sneak peek or the motor and the car.

What a great photo. Early thirdgen Camaro and LS. Can't think of anything to add that would improve upon that. Auto or manual are each fine options IMO.

Re: 84 Z28, Childhood dream

Well, funny story... I stumbled onto another smoking deal that I could not say no to. I found another third gen!

1989 camaro rs
383 stroker
5 spd
104,000 KM on the body, roughly 15000 on the motor.
T tops

It is in very good shape, and I got it for a steal of a deal and I couldn't say no.

Thank you. I think if I were 20 again I'd probably get a set. But realize now I'd struggle with changing that great original Z appearance. Maybe because original appearance cars are relatively rare any more, even among groups of thirdgen Zs.
