whinning sound- manual transmission

Hi,
I have a1986 irocz with manual T-5 which in 1st gear and 2nd gear (to lower degree) a whining sound is noticed when decelerating and gear is off. I am assuming it might he differential/pinion bearing, but it sounds so close below the driver seat that I am not sure if coming from transmission. Is that occurs typically with differential noise?
Any help of suggestion appreciated!
Thanks.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

it's obviously hard to describe sounds, but I had an issue with a whining sound anytime is wasn't in gear, and the clutch pedal was pressed. (input shaft and crankshaft turning different speeds). Turned out to be the pilot bearing.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

I am not much of a mechanic, but the pilot bearing is on the transmission or rear end?

Back of the crank. This is an 85-down crank. Your 86 will look different but with the same bearing.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

When the transmission is OUT of the car, the shaft sticking out the front of it is the input shaft. The very tip of it sits in the pilot bearing/bushing, which as mentioned is in the back end of the crank. In that picture, you can see all the tiny needle bearings in the pilot. Many people do NOT like the bearing because they can potential fail, -and run a bushing, with no moving parts.

Just google pilot bushing. TONS of pics.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

And the noise that might occur when this bearing is dysfunctional, happens its clutch pedal not pressed.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

Well if it IS the pilot that's bad, then it would likely occur when the pedal IS depressed. ....or in the process of being pressed or released. .....when the pedal is out, the clutch is engaged and the input shaft is synchronized with the crank, so the there's no friction on that pilot bushing. As soon as you press the clutch, the mechanical linkage between input and crank is released and then friction on that pilot bushing can occur.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

If it's making the noise when the clutch is -not- depressed, it could be the throw out bearing. If the noise goes away as soon as you start to depress the clutch, that's where I would look.

Re: whinning sound- manual transmission

It's located on the end of the clutch fork.
