Hi guys,

I have been having serious heat soak problems with my car and I replaced the starter twice before upgrading to a gear reduction starter with little improvement, I even replaced both battery cables and got a heat shield. I have heard that remote mounting a ford solenoid is a good solution. What will I need to install the remote solenoid and how do I do it? Any help is greatly appreciated!! PS: My car is a 1989 Camaro Rs (5.0 v8) with a 5-speed manual.

 

The starter solenoid gets jumpered to the starter lug. The excite wire goes to the Ford relay to control it the other post of the Ford relay is ground if equipped some are internally grounded.

 

 

Dropping two cents to provide a pictorial representation on what I did. After my header install I cooked two factory starters and a power master gear reduction starter. (Power master replaced it under warranty ) Only things I bought were the solenoid and the pre made red battery cable.

I solved the heat related problems by using a "mini" starter (to put distance between it and the headers) wrapping the headers and putting a reflective blanket on the starter. Plus the solenoid. Been working for 8 years now.

P.S. don't judge me for the chitty looking install, I put it in when the power master went belly up in a gas station parking lot. Didn't fix it, went home on the second tow truck because the car was too low for the first one Lol

Thanks for the reply guys, another question i have is that my car is a manual transmission so with this wiring it seems like the bendix gets thrown out at the same time the starter is spinning, wont this make it hard for the bendix to engage with the flywheel as it is already spinning before the gears make contact (bendix and flywheel gears)? thanks for the help

 

I never had any problems. But I was using a stock-type starter (my problem was voltage drop through the many connections on the purple "start" wire - remote solenoid didn't mind so much).

By the way, don't do a remote solenoid with a permanent magnet starter. It won't disengage, because after the engine starts, it turns the starter motor into a generator.

 

The starter won't spin until its solenoid has extended the drive gear into the flywheel. The connection from the battery terminal on the starter solenoid to the starter motor isn't made until the bendix is extended. This connection is internal to the starter solenoid.
